Has anyone seen my shoe?
Thats the thing, the plane isnt moving as the conveyor is stopping it, much like when you run on a running machine, you stay in the same place (pretty much) but if the belt wasnt there you would be moving. Unlike you running on a treadmill, they are not powered by their wheels. So the treadmill has no effect.I cannot explain it any clearer, and fear I am repeating myself already! Maybe if you imagine swapping the plane for a hovercraft? Would the hovercraft move forwards?? Has anyone seen my shoe?
yes as its not effected by the conveyor, however the plane is different, msn bitch
Tony Harrison
Yes it can. A firefly once was spotted by an engine driver who thought it was a warning light, and so he stopped. Turned out there were twisted rails ahead nearby and they were saved from a nasty crash. Think Queen Victoria was on the train or something... long time ago... probably a twisted fable or something...
Tomm
If the wheels aren't moving faster than the treadmill (and they're not, the riddle says so), then how can the plane move?

manuel
yes as its not effected by the conveyor, however the plane is different, msn bitch how the hell is the plane different ? nutter...onzaboymark had the train one down too ages ago .... some tiny portion of the train deflects slightly (and so yes a very small portion of the train stops very briefly)- and the plane effing well does take off ... Dan6061
Plane:Plane is still. Not turned on, or moving.Conveyor belt has the plane on it, and moves the plane down the runway on itself. So the plane is just sat on the conveyor belt, so if the conveyor gos fast enough, surely this will have the same effect as the plane moving itself down the runway? Has anyone seen my shoe?
The plane is constantly in the same position because of the conveyor right?Like on a running machine or a car on a dyno? manuel
The plane is grounded, hover craft relies on its ability to float off the groundPlane effing well doesn't take off.ok just say for this the wheel bearings are perfect .... Ok fool think about this .... Imagine in this example a hand from god holds the plane still. the conveyorbelt starts ... what happens ... the plane stays still and the wheels go round AND as the bearings are frictionless .... the hand from god does not experience any difficulty holding the plane still .... as in it needs to exert no force fowards .... Now imagine the hand does exert a force fowards => the thing goes foward and the wheels just turn faster.NOW EXCHANGE HAND OF GOD FOR ENGINE = LIFTOFF In fact just think about it this way - if a planes wheel bearings were frictionless when you tuned on the conveyorbelt the plane would not move. ADD A FORCE FOWARDS = LIFTOFF ... Edited November 19, 2006 by manuel
Tony Harrison
To anyone who is trying to convince people that the plane takes off: I know, I understand - frustrating isn't it?The plane takes off, simply because the conveyor has NO EFFECT on it. The plane's wheels are free-turning. The plane is pushed forward by the engine's thrust against the surrounding air. Forget the f**king conveyor and go back to bed... Has anyone seen my shoe?
NOT IF THE SPEED OF THE PLANE IS BEING COUNTER ACTED BY THE CONVEYOR BELT.Essentially what you have just said is for instance a car on a dyno going at 60, suddenly accelerates, the cars still on the dyno as the rollers have kept up with it.
Tony Harrison
That's because the wheels of the car are driving it! It's as if the road is moving underneath it! The plane uses the AIR to push it along - the wheels are spinning like crazy but not stopping the plane.Jesus Christ, I always wondered who did 'double science' GCSE... THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN HAPPEN IS IF THE WHEELS CANNOT MOVE .... ALSO - THE PLANE IS NOT POWERED BY THE WHEELS !!!!
Janson
imagine a shopping trolley with a beefy RM7 turbojet engine gaffer taped to it. the belt will make f**k all difference, as the trolley is driven by the massive engine and not the tiny wheels, which would be useless for driving due to their instability. Tony Harrison
You're wasting your time manuel, people like this refuse to ditch what they 'know' is the correct answer. I apologise you are still missing the point - just because the speed of the conveyorbelt is referenced to the plane it doesnt mean it is having any effect whatsoever on it. the conveyorbelt could be going a million miles an hour in the opposite direction and it would still take off (although - in the real world the friction in the bearings would scupper this...) poopipe
I dont doubt your intelligencepossibly the most outrageous lie ever posted on tf -oh, and the plane will take off only if it uses high quality stainless japanese bearings Edited November 19, 2006 by poopipe
