Wireless Modem Router

The enchanted broomstick

Recommended Posts

Howdy all, using a wireless modem router to create a wireless network between the main pc and my laptop. I put the adsl line into the router and an ethernet cable from the router to the network card of the main pc and voila i have an internet connection. However the laptop (built in wireless) cant find a wireless network at all.

Would this be because i've used an ethernet cable to directly link the modem to the main pc.....?

Any other suggestions or help would be muchly appreciated as always.

Hey i would say this defo isnt because of the reason you have stated by i dont know why it doesnt work.

Have u installed everything?

But i am almost 100% sure its not because you have used a cable to connect to the mian pc because yours works and we have done what you have done and all our laptops connect.

I really have no idea whats going on at all, i've got internet coming through on the main pc, fast, reliable, everything. Its just that the laptop isnt even seeing a wireless signal. I click the icon in the taskbar, the box comes up, i click "refresh network list" and nothing comes up........... :S

This may sound stupid, but you have setup wireless right?

Sometimes its off by default, and requires you to log into the router and turn it on.

He's right, log into the router settings, usally by typing http://192.168.01 into your web address bar (for netgear anyway) it then asks for username/password which is usually set to (until you change it):

Username: admin

Password: password

Allow all wirelss connections for a start, then set the laptop looking for the router, once its found it setup an access list so that only computers you select can access the connection and your all done.

You might have to switch off the firewall on the laptop or set up firewall rules in order to access the network, for most firewalls you can set the security to high and it'll ask you what to do when it tries connecting, just tell it to always allow it and you'll be alright from there.

http://192.168.1.1

Also, the username is often left blank, then password is 'admin'. Thats how it was for mine anyway.

Not got a netgear router then? Doesnt work for my netgear one... it just continually loads nothing till i stop it. Might be worth noting what router you do have simon ;) then we have two makes covered.
