i have been riding for 9 months now and i think that i aint maintaining my bike enough

i tried the search but couldnt find exactly what it need

i want to know how you guys maintain your bike, either after a hard ride, and the things u check/clean weekly or whatver period of time you do..

the only things i do are:

- pumping up tires

- check if all bolts are tightent, if not i tighten them

- same as above for spokes and chain

- drying my bike with a towel after a ride in the rain

the things i want to know are:

- how to maintain disc brakes (front and rear)

- maintaining freewheel and bb

i think i forgot something but i can't remember

i would also like to know what spray to use and stuff, and which not to, i think i read that wd40 isnt good or something..

i forget something please tell me

thanks in advance

clean my king when it starts to skip....

and replace parts on my bike that break.

Thats about as much maintanance as i do :P

I look at mine.. pull the lever.. if it goes to bars put water in... then ride. I dont really do maintenance any more.

I fix whatever's broken, and don't tinker with whatever works.

My chain never need's tightened because my snail cams are great :P Things like BB/hubs/headset don't get worked on unless they are actually causing problems, they are prepared before fitting and then forgotten about until they break.

I am having hassle with my front disk at the moment though so i'm going to have to sort that out, the problem being I don't know where to start!

It's good to check bolt's and stuff but it's really just a case of making sure that you screw stuff in properly in the first place.

Im really loving my set-up at the minute apart from my disc giving me hassle, so im more inclined than ever to not touch the bike and just ride.

Spend a full day cleaning parts.

Take the entire bike to bits, headset, cranks bb, everything.

Clean all the dirt/grit and general crap off the parts and then re-grease everything and stick it back into the frame in whatever way neccessary for that particular component. Make sure everything is thoroughly greased and all bolts are done up tightly.

Your bike is now fine till next year, unless something breaks or stops working.

I used to maintain mine.

Full strip serive every month, allways kept it clean and well adjusted.

Replaced the chain, cassette ad chainriung every 6 month like clockwork.

Now I dont bother, just keep riding it until it stops moving, fix it a bit and keep riding.

As long as it works Ill ride it

To clean my bike I use a tooth brush, a pot noodle pot full of warm water and lot's of bog roll. My bike is allways clean, starting to develop some scratches but there is no dirt on there at all.

Wire wool to polish fork's and cranks,

As far as grease goe's I tend to just use vaseline unless it has to be specific, in which case I use whatever is specified.......

I usually check my cranks bolts and headset are tight when i go out, mainly because both those things have given me trouble in the past. Oil the chain occasionally as has been said, and then as long as the tyres are hard and the brakes work I just ride.

For the chain I use 3-in-1 oil, seems fine. If you ride in the rain you might want to oil it aftewards.

Now I have a question: I ran out of my old grease, which was slimy translucent yellow stuff. Now I have a tube of stuff that calls itself Lithium Grease. Is this any different i.e. alright to use? I only ask cos it's thick white stuff instead of translucent yellow stuff and it doesn't say much on the tube.

I'm like a ot of people who replied here.., I just fix when it breaks, otherwise I don't touch my bike and I seem to have less problem than a mate who's working in a bike shop and is maintanning is bike often, he tells, you should clean this or that, i never do it, and I have no problem :)

my rule : why change/maintain something when everything uis already working fine (Y)

I fit everything properly, thick grease for headsets etc, copper grease or regular thin grease for most threads and other bits.

I check my crank bolts as theyve got a habit of coming loose but other than that its a fix it if it breaks thing. If i get bored i might strip down my headset and regrease it, used to do that with wheels too before i had sealed bearings. Rarely wash my bike but if i do its a proper job. If i take something off for whatever reason i always clean it up and regrease/adjust.whatever before i put it back on. Degrease my rims to get the crap out of them every couple of weeks too.

what do you guys use to clean your bike?

do what to your bike?

and what stuff should you use when greasing your bike?

i got lithium grease because its white - it appears to work fine. i want some of that flourescent yellow stuff next time though.

the only maintenance i get involved in is replacing tubes (i dont fix punctures anymore), tightening TPA or replacing whatever snaps off.

doesn't lithium react with water? :S

I just use finish line cross country lube for chain, and finish line teflon grease for bearings and threads. (Y) Only thing I've needed to tamper with on my bike since its been put together are the brake pads

WD40 I found dissipates within a few days which is pretty annoying and thicker greases on my chain attract all the metal (+ dirt) when I'm grinding my rim...

you know what, I just realised I'm such a fanny about all of this and i shouldn't really care bout greases and stuff :$

Yes.

But when lithuim particles are covered in grease it doesn't. Or soemthing. I dunno.

All you need to know is that it doesn't blow up. there's potassium in Pot Noodles, that also 'reacts with water' and yet you eat it.

EDIT: /drunk.

I use a KMC Single speed chain and Monty Snail cam's I honestly don't have any chain tension issue's and only ver re-adjust when theback wheel is removed for grinding or something, but i've started doing it on the bike now.....

I guess that's why magnesium pedals don't sizzle when it's raining :P

right i learned a valuable lesson about maintance today, don't try to fix anything when you don't exactly know how to do it :P

had a very little bent in my rim, and my disc was making quite an annoying sound because of it, but still worked great though

so i thought like ''hmm i should try tightening some loose spokes'',and that made it way worse now :

i'm not going to try to fix it now because im sure it will end up even worse :P

a friend of mine is a bike mechanic so i'm gonna ask him about spoke tensioning next time we're gonna ride
