GTF
Shimano Sora rear mech and a Shimano 12-21T cassette (or a Viz 12-17T or Try-All 13-18T if you got a Hope Pro 2 hub)
Concussion
I like / need gears, but don't want all the weight of a full cassette. So..... take an old/new cassette apart, put a say` 18t (trials)and a 12t (getting about), on the rear using spacers from the cassette and maybe a few others to fill it up. (put your trials gear, 18t in line with your front sprocket for a good chainline when it counts!) Use the adjuster screws on the rear mech (Sora is a good choice) to limit it to only covering the two cogs.... tension the cable as you would normally do, and only use two clicks on your shifter to change gears. You could even do away with the shifter and just use the mech-cable adjuster to switch between gears! Search for mech bodge etc.Well it's an idea.... hope that made sense? er` like this!

RidestreetUK
Im planning on taking the 3 bottom cogs out and replacing them with chase neutral gear or cassete spacers for easy fakies
RobinJI
Yeah, roadie mech/cassete is awsome Although I'd say go for sram gears, they just work much better, unfortunatly you cant get a really short rear mech by sram without spending lots.If you're on a budget then get a Sram 12-21 cassete and tiagra or 105 rear mech, they work fine with shimano mtb shifters, but I'd say get a sram attack shifter. The sram shifters are worth going for as you dont have to take you're finger off the the break lever for up shifts like you do with shimanos. Sora mechs are ok if you're not really gunna use the gears, but there not as tough or nice shifting as the tiagra or 105 which are only a few quid more expencive. TomR
I got a tiagra mech and a 105 cassette which i'll soon be taking apart. I actually use the two highest gears on it!
old_boy_rider
Shimano sora for a budget, Sram short cage X9/X7 for just a little more.I like the sram better because they only pivot from one point and have higher spring tension - keeps things tight.8 speed shimano road cassette, sram SX5 shift levers for the sram RD(if you use a sora RD use a Sram Attack shift lever or a shimano Alivio 8 speed) Edited October 24, 2006 by old_boy_rider

Lawnmowerman
Sram x-4, x-7 or x-9 over that Shimano crap. They're a lot more consistant when shifting, the ration is 1-1 and the mech is already locked out so when you do drops you won't have your mech bouncing up and hitting your chainstay. GTF
When I think about the the SRAM is better than the Sora mech i recomended at first
Concussion
Yeah, me also! I always knew they had more tension, but didn't know some were `locked-out`!Been having a look on CRC... bit confuzed though, x-4, x-7 or x-9, SX-4, SX-5 and on and on? What is the all out best for trials me wonders? And when they say 9 speed, that just means it can cover a range of 9 sprockets, as the shifter dictates the movement / amount of cable etc? Is that right ?
