Trouble Sleeping.

If i conciously make the effort not to move I drift off within 20 mins without fail. I think it forces your body to relax, when normally your mind's so hyper you keep moving about all the time.

But that's quite difficult sometimes, so something else to do it read a non-exciting book. Something that you're not going to get engrossed in.

I have a book of French vobaulary (learning French) and it works a treat. :P

sound advice.

that's the only thing short of special cuddles or drinking a lot that gets me to nod off.

I learnt about the dicovery of the rare earth elements and how the periodic table was invented all last week - an excellent night's sleep every time (Y)

ask a friend to meet you with a baseball bat. That might help, might hurt after a week but atleast youll be rested :)

I just tire myself out during the day so by the time i have my tea Im really needing to go to sleep

Surely a special cuddle willl keep you awake.

Know what i mean, know what i mean, nudge nudge, know what i mean, say no more. ;)

How bored am i, quoting off MP

Edit: On the whole music thing, weirdly i can't get to sleep with chilled out music. But i can with metal music. Is it just me that thinks thats strange.

Most of my life I've had difficulty sleeping. It doth sucketh. But I know a few things about getting to sleep because of it.

If you can, the best technique is simply to hold a blank mind. Hold it for even a short period of time and sleep will not be far behind. Of course it's not always that easy, especially in situations where you're excited and your thoughts are on a spin cycle.

An alternative and easier method of clearing the mind is to begin by looking at three objects in your room, giving each about a minute, but not letting anything else enter your mind beside what you are staring at. Follow this by closing your eyes and listening to three seperate sounds and then finally, physically sense three seperate things, like maybe your heartbeat, breathing or your bed sheets. This technqie really does work, especially with a bit of practise. It's basically what the other chap recommended with the idea of reading something unexciting and it also relates to what I'm going to say next.

The final thing is to develop a similar pattern of behaviour just before you goto bed each night. For instance every night you might drink a glass of water followed by brushing your teeth, reading a book and giving teddy a hug goodnight. The mind is a programmable device and associating behaviour types (teeth cleaning, book, teddy, etc) with sleep for long enough will eventually cause those behaviour types to become the minds recognisable cues for sleep. Your body will begin the process of slowing down when the cues begin, so when you reach the time of sleep your mind will have slowed and sleep show follow with a degree of ease. Check out "Pavlov's Dog" if you want to understand this type of condtioning better.

Nope, I find that too, something really heavy, "The Chariot" sends me off pretty quick, but chilled music does work too, Jose Gonzalez does the trick nicely!

The best thing is if someone gently strokes the bridge of your nose, kinda between your eyebrows, it sends you off, it's one of those weird pressure point things but obviously this requires a friend to do it for you (I love my Missus)!

I'm gonna really annoy you now and let you know that, on average, it takes somewhere between 3 and 10 minutes for me to get to sleep.

I just usually lie there face down on the bed, take a deep breath and let it out and thats it... usually i'm asleep.

However if i can't get to sleep for more than 5 minutes i get agitated, this results in me then having to try and get to sleep, for which i do exactly the same, but i think about a scenario that i could be in... like riding in a competition or having fun riding a skatepark. After about a minute of lieing there, eyes closed thinking about riding i "make it more interesting", this usually involves something really far fetched like pulling off double backflip 360 tailwhips or something equally crazy, after another minute move on to something even more crazy... aliens lazers and spaceships trying to stop me riding should do it, and at this point you should find yourself already starting to drift to sleep and the story your imagining will start to carry on without you thinking about it. Another minute and you'll be asleep ^_^

Apparantly it has something to do with concentrating on and using the creative side of your brain, the one thats most active when sleeping (for dreaming obviously), if you concentrate on using it while lieing still the other parts of the brain have nothing to do (motor control, problem solving... stuff like that) they effectively go to sleep, this, funnily enough... also sends you off to sleep.

Works everytime ;)

P.S. If at the "drowsy/dreams taking over" stage you realise your going to sleep, dont get excited think of it as an accomplishment and smile, or reposition yourself to get comfy for sleeping because you've just used the motor section of the brain and will have to start again to send it off to sleep.

the worst thing you can do is worry about it , like when i used to have trouble sleeping a few years ago i used to think about during the day panicing that i wouldnt be able to fall asleep that night so when you finally do go to bed it nearly impossible

in the end i just started sleeping easily again, try to exercise during the day dont eat to late and get into bed like 30 mins before you wanna go to sleep and relax and watch tv or read then try to not worry and you should fall asleep

I used to have it in uni. My main tip would be not to get annoyed at the fact you cant get to sleep. Many times I've wound myself up at like 1am thinking 'shit got work in the morning, need to sleep', and before I know it its 4am - even more annoying, vicious circle. Now I just think '1am, never mind :('

I find going to the pub every night works a treat for going straight to sleep. Nights where I don't go to the pub (rare) I find it difficult.
