Fixed Pants™
Hey, just wondering if roughing up the rim will help with grip and what not, i was thinking of getting something (like my minimoto) to spin the wheel round whilst pressing some sandpaper on it to give it a rougher surface, is this a good idea or shall i just shut up? Fixed Pants™
Didn't wanna really take it that far though, but it it was going to get grinded it'd be have to be VERY VERY VERY light.

Grinding is actually more or less making ditches across the rim braking surface like this: | | | | | | | | | | | Your idea will create them along the surface: =================== and it shouldn't make a significant change in braking power. Similar ditches along rim braking surface can be found on rims with cnc'd braking surfaces (e.g. DX32) but I think it works more like a dust cleaner. What......surely it depends on the angle you hold the grinder or whatever this topic has magically uncovered...
anzo
What......surely it depends on the angle you hold the grinder or whatever this topic has magically uncovered...He means the whole sanding lengthways and vertically. Meaning if he were to spin his wheel and sand it, it would have to be lengthways, which will do piss all to his braking.Lines have to be horizonal to be vertical to the pad in order to have an effect (to create drag). But yea...I won't insult your intellegence and explain further...I'm just explaining it in a more 'complex' and bullshitty way then he did...yea. ramps
Worked for me, when I have zoo! pads, Just looks like a grind but is hardly actually there
Fixed Pants™
Well minimoto + wheel on trials bike = moving trials wheel, and maybe not press, but maybe a up down motion (like the motion when you wank ) might give the same kind of effect as a grind. Davetrials
just grind it like 99.9% of trials riders it doesnt kill rims riding like a basher kills rims.

manxrider
Why would you post it? Angle grinders can be as cheap as £10-12.
Fixed Pants™
Well, i'd prefer tarty to do it, i'm well know by my mates to be quite lethal with angle grinders, and i don't have a very steady hand, i also don't wanna have to pay 30 quid for a new rim
lawrence osborn
Lightly grind it like this my mate has done it, it works supe \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ all the way round it works brillliant on my mates bike
N.Wood
Glen, you don't need to take yo' tyre off to grind it, just fold it back.I wouldn't bother sandpapering/filing it whatever, it makes zero difference.Use some tar if you want better performance
Fixed Pants™
Meh, its just with a grind it kills the pads too quick, and i don't have an angle grinder despite them being only 10 quid... decisions decisions, gah, i might get a light grind in the near future, just see how the rear maggie turns out. Dan6061
Sand papering it is a good way to clean the rim..will scrub off all the crap on it, and will make it shiney again. My mate filed his rim to clean it/sorta roughen it up a bit for more grip. He has Zoo pads, so grinding is a no no...

PaRtZ
I tried sandpapering and filing because I was scared of destroying my rim. Both had very crap results and in the end i just gave up and grinded it
eskimo
Why is this even in the FAQ?past me..Grind are hard to beat. Maybe a plaz or ceramic rim. But all have benefits and downfalls.
Fishy
If your too pussy to grind it, then use a stanley knife? Score it across the rim, almost like a grind, but so much less deep.
