Built My Wheel For The First Time

hey

i built my rear wheel for the first time and it was easy as hell lol

but i dont kow how tight to have my spoke and i dont want to cash out on a tension meter.

can someone like describe to me how tight i should have it.

i think its a bit too tight right now and im scared that if i use it too tight my wheel wont flex and go bang.

also...

does it matter if theres like a little egg in my wheel. about 1mm lol these things get me so paranoid!

thanks very much

JK

They can go pretty tight, but it's more of a case of keeping the wheel straight. As long as it's tight-ish then then wheel isn't going to fall apart*.

*Unless you have a Pro II in which case it's best to do the nipples up finger tight and hope for the best. Or so I heard.

Have you got some other wheels built by professional wheel builders that you can compare? I would say you want to go pretty tight with a normal finger spoke key, but don't go nuts. As long as the tension is even on both sides (just about) and around the wheel, don't worry too much.

Ping a spoke with your finger nail, or if you're musical a tuning fork, and compare it to another wheel. If it's similar, it's probably about right.

Or as Ash said, flex the spokes above where they cross.

As for the egg - it's fine and fair play for getting so little on you're first effort.
