nickyw
Ok...In my area it's soo poo.We have nothing to do at all.I live next to a park,Which the council flattend a playground thing which had swing's and all the other usual play kiddy stuff.About a year(or more) after that they gave us some crappy sqaure goal post's for us to play football on the field (Which we have a proper football thing about a 5 minute walk away from the park).I once built some jump's on the park which also got flattend in the next day.My main question is,What can i do to get the council to sort us a skatepark?Ive seen website's were you leave some sort of message on it(The more message's the merrier). It's mainly my mum's idea but there's loads of kid's round here who have to travel about 1 hour away from my area to go somewere decent to ride,Which sometime's often lead's em to be robbed. My park which i live next to get's closed at a certain time...So no-one mess's around on there,Plus there massive spiky gate's with vandal grease on top so no one can climb up.....Any idea's on what to do,To get me a skatepark?Thank's
JT!
We're just about to get a saktepark built here. It's been planned for about a decade, i don't know much about it really becuase i never atended any of the meetings, but basicly our counsil says, if you get all the money together, we'll find a place, and we'll do it. Then now that it's come round to it, the counsil are being all high and mighty as if it was their idea, and how they like to support outdoor activitys etc etc blah blah when they coudn't give a shit, so long as their £150,000 flower clock is ok, they don't really givce two shits. So, yeah, basicly get a group of people together, talk to your counsil, but expect to be begging for money for a few years. TomR
Go to your local council and ask if theres a local youth forum meeting you can attend. Attend the meeting with a few mates and bring the idea up, continue going to the meetings and let it go from there. Get a petition done and signed by anyone you can, random old people on the streets who want you off the streets and in somewhere specific, mates from school/work, parents.. whoever and present that at a meeting when youve got enough names.Research into companies and materials but be realistic with it as from a local authorities point of view its almost certainly going to be metal or concrete due to vandalism, and concrete is pricey, so expect metal. If you plan your own layout don't be a pushover. insist on it, we had ours planned out by my mate and it was a great layout. They turned up one day with a design from some shitty company called 'playdale' and in the end we pissed off and left it to them. They insisted on the ramps being XXX distance apart due to 'legal health and safety restrictions'. I looked into it and they were bullshitting us, they were only guidelines that werent legally enforcable and people only went along with them to make it look like theyve considered the safety aspect. I told the council this and they ignored me.Just be wise to these old busybody morons in their 60's who think they know best, they really dont. You need to insist on them seriously considering your options and back yourself up. If needs be, get a petition against any suggestions they make that you dont like if its serious enough. If you want any more info PM me. RobinJI
A skatepark got built across the road from me, after something like 7 years campaigning, it ended up being shit and unsafe. So all I've got to say, is to make sure that there is rider input in the design, or you'll end up like chard, with a £30000 flatbank, quater and box. But then again my area is shit.I'm not saying not to try for it, infact the oposite, try as hard as you can and you will get something built, but make sure you/your friends see it through to the end, and check over the designs. nickyw
Thank's for the fast replies guy's...How long will it actually take and how will i get the money?
TomR
If depends entirely on how well you see it through. It took our town nearly 8 years i think because one group of skaters would start going ot the emetings then give up, then another group would do the same, etc..It took us a year or two form start to finish. The local council were revamping the local rec' so had money set aside for such projects and allowed us a budget. Thats why i suggested the local youth forum (if there is one, should be), they have a budget set aside for projects like this and will also help with fundraising if needs be. TomR
Get your local authority to apply for some sort of youth project grant probably.
Jaffacakes
There's no point even trying. My dad and his mates started campaigning for a park about 20 year's ago and it just got built, it sucks balls aswel. It's these crappy "rhino ramps" and we got completely ripped off buying them, if they just made it out of concrete it would actually have some grip, and it would have been about half the price so we could have had lights. The park we have is completely unridable at night because of the jew, as soon as a drop of water gets on the ramps they become slippier than ice. There not very nice even when its sunny there still stupidly slippy Better than nothing though.
