My chinq yesterday decided to set on Fire (N) ....after a collision with a drunk driver. :( So it is no more (Much to Fred Judds disappointmet)

I'm looking for a classic, something that stands out, my budget is rougly a grand.

I would love a beetle, but has anyone else got any ideas of what i should get?

classic for about a grand.hmmmmmm.

good condition wise, got only one solution

ford capri.

but if your after a lil project, road legal, but is about as far from concourse as possible, and is different then look in

triumph spitfire (altho there is a very nice lookin one on an ebay classified, tidy as can be at 1750, would probably be yours for 1500 and is a minter)

mg midget- dunno if appleyard sean is on here, know him through some biking forum anyway, hes got one for sale for 1500, and theres plenty more going from 400-2500 on ebay, from munters throught to concourse.

triumph TR-7???- be a ropy example, but one hell of a car

also to be considered -hillman minx's and hillman hunters.

if your totally mad, a nice morris minor wouldnt go a miss either.

edit : just been on ebay, lookin at elise's an thinkin about gettin one, when i noticed this beast http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lotus-Elite-1979-liv...1QQcmdZViewItem

Cheers for the reply, i have been looking at Spitfires spesh MK3s i think there the sex, but i'm seventeen with no "no claims" so i would have though that the insurance would have been very very expensive, or am i wrong?

Mitch

dont know to be honest, youd have to look into it, at the end of the day there value to thieves and twoccers is low, so they aint gunna be bad on that front, and they are only a 1500cc, and when your buyin one, most insurers know you aint gunna be the boy racer who could be lurking in that corsa,saxo,106,nova,306 or pretty much any other recent hatch.

also bear in mind your going on a classic policy which is bugger all normally, best bet would be to ring up and get some quotes, at the end of the day im 18, driving a highly modified bmw 3 series, and paying under 900 fully comp with pretty much all the trimmings. an ive had a smash, cant see you being any higher risk driving an old 1500cc beast compared than me with a relatively modern car wearing fibreglass, big alloys, spoiler, fancy one off induction kit, etc.

also think about buying say a 1.0l nov or a 1.5td*cough* cooking oil *cough*. for under 200 now, insuring it third party nice an cheaply, an keeping ur spitfire of the like off the road till youve gt it how you want it, by which time you will most likely be 18, might of been driving a year an may have a years no claims.

whats your insurance company

norwich union direct. original quote was well over 1450 with them, but with some bartering and better offers from brokers etc, they ended up giving it me for about 890 on my car.

that includes

bodykit(smoothed in as well),dehandled re doors, resprayed in pearlescent paint, spoiler, induction kit, exhaust, 18 inch alloys, private plate, an a load of other stuff i dont car to mention(interior wise,an stuff like mirrors etc)

so a big recommendation goes to bartering?

how did you do it? phone up a few insurance companies and then haggle with them telling them that you've been offered cheaper elsewhere?

just I've got to go about getting insurance on my car once I've passed :S and I think I'm going to get my pants pulled down over the cost.

yea, they told me 1450, i said, "sorry ive been offered cheaper else where, they said they match it, they gave me a reference for the quote to match(which theyd offered me 1210,other place wanted 1235) said id get back to them, rang round a few more places, asking them if they beat the previous best price, keep switching between insurers on each phone call saying youve been offered the last price(can lie an say u been offered it for less than u have, but with some places likes barclays insurance, they ask for proof) can they beat it

till eventually every companies said they cant go no lower, then u just pick the lowest.
