Dr. Nick Riviera
ahoy hoy noble fellowes of yonder t-f.as i'm sure a few of you are aware, i have recently(6 weeks) become one of our countries many homeless peoples. it's f**king awful, i tell you now, always have a plan b, people who claim to be there for your benefit will f**k you over in the name of budgeting, but i digress....i've been left with a very small number of seemingly bleak options and i am here seeking suggestions.brief bit of background, am 17 (till july 07) , in my second year of college. no real plans as to university. and it seems i've got to do one of the following until i'm 18 and can get sorted properly.i have the option of sheltered housing in a complete shithole about 10 miles from everything.pros: near train stationcons: house is also full of twats and degenerate scum. would cost me money. smells badi could live with my grandparents.pros: secure source of food and place to sleepcons: senile old fools, 3 miles from nearest train station, live in the middle of nowhere, getting to college is a big issue. drop out of college, get a full time job, rent somewhere of my ownpros: somewhere to live, can move anywherecons: would be a f**king slog, and i would need someone to stand guarantor on a tennancy.pretty bleak eh?any advice welcome. cheerscharlie. pinky
I would say move in with your grandparents for a while, get a part time job and pay them a little housekeeping and then buy some sort of transport i.e moped ( It will get you about ) Also talk to your college they will be very understanding and might even finance some sort of transport for you i.e taxi to the nearest bus/train stop ( but I wouldnt hold your breath ) sorry to hear it all though mate good luck and things will get better
Fuse
It sounds like a pretty shitty situation. My advice would definitely be to move in with your grandparents. Moving into sheltered accomodation will, I imagine, be very detrimental to your studies in terms of trying to get anything done outside of college. For that reason I'd advise against it, as I would against dropping out and getting a job. You've only got one more year left and completing that should be a high priority. While moving in with your grandparents may not be ideal, at least you'll have somewhere safe and homely, so for those reasons alone I'd choose that option. I'd also advise showing them a little more respect than referring to them as 'senile old fools'. They're family after all, and at times like these when you really do need help, they seem to be there for you, cut 'em some slack yeah? Greetings
i could live with my grandparents. pros: secure source of food and place to sleep cons: senile old fools, 3 miles from nearest train station, live in the middle of nowhere, getting to college is a big issue. Definitely the best choice. They're still your family although we don't know what the relations between you are. Instead of trying to explain why I think this is the correct choice, I'll write why the others are bad. Bad company won't do you good. You could get bullied or even worse, become their friends. Whereas getting out of college isn't wise because you won't be able to find a good job (at a guess - that's how it is this end). Ok, you'll earn some money now but believe me, it's worth the hustle to keep studying. Nobody will take your qualifications away, and imo it's the key to a better life.I'm sorry for you
adamtrials
Grandparents, obviously i dont know what they are like but they certainly sound like the best option. Maybe they could give you lifts to the train station or you could bike it?
nmt_oli
Def live with grandparents, just cycle to college (or station then college) for now, get a part time job and save as much much money as you can. any holidays try and get overtime /full time work then you may have enough to sort out renting somewhere if you want to move out after college.Youve got more options than some people would in this situation, so use them. Glad to hear you alright still, all i can say is it makes me thankful of my situation, and its very hard to imagine what you must be going through.good luck, and if theres anything i might be able to do for you give me a shout, the worst i can do is say no so its worth a try! this prob goes for others too. Tomm
do your grandparents want to live with a juevanile little fook like you?Old people like company. True story.I'm gonna go with everyone else on this - it sounds like dropping out of college is the last thing you wanna do, in terms of getting yourself on your feet. If you can put up with living with the grandparents for a year, then you can get a decent job or get to uni the year after. Good luck
TomR
Could move in with your grandparents, get a full time job with training (day release at college). You'll be out of their way most of the time, you can save up to get your own place while our still at your grandparents and the company will pay for your travel to college.Seems the logical way, save some money for a good start off, continue at college while still earning a decent amount of money. Krisboats
Option 4Stay at college, live with grandparents briefly, pull a girl at college (any girl will do)... move in with her for a bit till you've got your place at uni sorted, go live in halls and get it payed for temporarily by the government. When you have your degree you'll be able to pay the loans back and earn enough to get your own place.^ Definately the best option

Krisboats
it is the best plan thoughIf he's real lucky he'll earn more money and pay it back quicker... or even better yet, he could win the money and pay it back straight away Its the only plan thats also taken into account him getting laid Edited September 29, 2006 by Krisboats
Extreme_biker0
In all seriousness, I'd say with regards to accomodation, your g-parents are the best option. So take that as sorted. Now...I would assess the college situation more closely. Yes, qualifications are a key to a better life, as someone said, but there are other ways to get them, as someone else has said.At the end of the day, I know *some* college qualifications aren't worth that much. I'm not saying your isn't worth much, as I don't know what you do. BUT, seeing as it is a hassle to get there now that you live with your g-parents, what else is there available to you?Apprenticeships pay SHIT, but you will get a qualification at the end of it. Have you taken any exams at college and do you have any formal qualifications from it yet which you can take to employers? Dr. Nick Riviera
firstly, i ever so slightly resent being called a juvenile fool. i was asking a serious question and expected a serious answer. my grandparents have unconditionally said i can live with them, score. getting to college ( A-levels ) will be a slog, but it's not the end of the world. meh.and second of all, in reality, income support will pay me more than a part time job will per week. and then i will have my weekends to get some work done. so looks like i've got a gameplan, will just be a lot of effort. ta to those that made decent suggestions. TomR
I remember watching some program which followed some homeless guy, can't remember why he was homeless but beforehand he led a perfectly normal life. The biggest problem he had and the one thing that helped him get a leg-up was having an address. With one of those you can apply for jobs, benefits, education.. so i think you've definitely gone in the right direction. What youre doing will set you on your new gameplan, whereas going to some hovel with aload of people who have the wrong attitude may just have got you stuck in the wrong lifestyle.Best of luck with it all. Fish-Finger-er
Can I ask why you were thrown out of your house? Kinda being nosey but is it not something which could be resolved?was on here a while back anzo, in fact im sure you replied in the topic. IIRC his mum has recently suffered a nervous breakdown, and in her best way of dealing with seemed to be kicking her son out, which she had the legal right to do with his age etc. when hes gone round there to collect belongings etc, hes been rather shocked with what hes seen, and didnt seem to think there was any chance of it being resolved. as for the ideas couple of plans, depending on how you want to live your lifegrandparents,an a crappy old nail to get to an from college, part time job etc.move on an up the ladder just living with the older folks, as opposed to the folks. or possibly live with the grandparents, get a menial, but relatively well payed full time job(i.e 40 hours a week, not stupid hours, hope for round 6 quid an hour) and then go for a open university degree. you miss out on the whole uni life, but you still get the qualification.just means youll be able to save some of the 1000ish u earn a month, so by 21, you got a nice lil nest egg to get you started rather than coming out of uni with about 20k of debt.or me being the bollox to the life plans, have a laugh, earn some cash, live the lifestyle, worry about it later kinda guy. i could suggest getting into cheffing, i did it for almost a year, but was in college at the same time. is an ok paying job, is a fun job, stressful though, but its great. a lot of chefs live in(i.e accomadation at the hotel/restaurant where there working, so thats food, leccy, water etc for around a ton a week, no travelling expenses to work, so whatevers left is left over to do what you want with) msot people in the cheffing industry are young and pill/pot/piss heads, a good laugh.drinking nights every so often, get to flirt with the bar staff, who have the same attitude and are almost exclusively 16-21. could work as many hours a week as i wanted, from about 35-85 depending on money needs. could if you really wanted to combine this with a open uni degree, and an nvq while at the restaurant/hotel. so could come out with a level 3 nvq in food preparation. an a open university degree in mechanical mathmatics. with no debt, and either a bunch of savings, or have had a hell of a party lifestyle. and most importantly for future employers, youd have life and work experiences too.
