The Bell Law

I read in the paper this morning that soon it will be illegal to ride without a bell  . If you break this law you face a 2000 pound fine, and up to 2 years in jail. All this because 12 people have been killed in the last 5 years by peple on bikes.

please discuss

The law before was that a new bike had to be equipped with a bell, i.e. if you went into a shop/mail-order and got a new bike, it had to have a bell on it. The law they're trying to get introduced now is that you have to keep a bell on your bike, or you face up to a £2.5K fine. However, this law has to be passed fully first (which I'm not sure it has?) and then you have to have the police actually enforce it...

How is this supposed to even stop people getting hit?

Bells will only be used when people can actually see there is someone about to cross their path, if that's the case, the rider should use their common sense and slow down, or avoid the danger.

If you can't see someone, you can't alert them to your presence without using a f**king siren constantly.

Pedestrians are the problem, not taking into consideration that there are things on the road that don't make loads of noise and throw out gas, well not toxic gas anyway....

Personally if someone walked out infront of me, my instant reaction would not be, o I had better ring the bell, it would be to shout get out the f***ing way. I just find it to be the most rediculous thing I have heard in the last few weeks.

Oh noes, what will the weight freaks have to say about this.

The extra 200g would ruin their bikes.

It's stupid, like someone said. Your first reaction won't be to ring the bell.

Personally i see it as discouraging the whole bike thing, it's the same as the number plate thing. It's going to make less people ride. Whereas the government are supposed to encourage riding.

I bet the guy who made the law is just some rich guy that drives in his Bentley all day and gets annoyed by bikers, and only walks and gets annoyed then too. Get someone who actually rides bikes to make these sorts of decisions i say.

excellent - you got a decent avatar again :D

So assuming this law gets passed, I'll be in less trouble for not having brakes than not having a bell ?

Genius.

What they ought to fine people for is wearing headphones while riding on the road - I'd stake OBMs life on that being the cause of more road deaths in a year than cyclists manage to chalk up in decade

Haha, cheers :P Can't work out whether it's a compliment or not though ;)

I was actually going to say they'd be mad pissed about me not having brakes on my BMX too, although having said that when I got stopped for "tearing the arse out of it" whilst riding on a pavement (I was doing about walking pace 'cos I saw the police car, but he was angry I'd hopped up a curb?), he didn't mention at all that I didn't have brakes or anything like that at all. I guess most police people aren't going to be fully knowledgeable about bikes so many probably wouldn't really get it anyway. Just say you've got a coaster brake or something :P

Or noisy brakes??

Always does the job when i go on rides...good old pull of the brake, and people move hah

Damn double disc bikes, thats me screwed.....

Its stupid and it'll probably never even get to the house of Lords. Blair and Brown have enough to worry about as it is without some stupid bell-law (anyone else think that sounds ABSOLUTELY hilarious to say? Bell law...)

Bah, just go all partz stylee and wack a horn on there ;)

When the police stop me for having no light's/reflectors I just say "where can I put them? they just get trashed" then they say "Then your bikes not road legal, push it home". So you walk around the corner and start riding it.

It'll probably be the same sort of thing with a bell. It's not like anyone actually listens to the police anyway

It's not Illegal for a car not to have a horn is it?

I think this has about as much chance of being enforced as the number plate law.

I've got a bell on my XC bike and I love it. I ring it as I bunny hop off kerbs :P

I think it could be a new trend to put a bell on a trials bike. One, some people are ****ing idiots and walk directly in the way and it would be a good way to warn them. And also, just because it might be quite fun to ring a bell just before a drop off :D

Yes.
