Snail Cam Review

thought i would do a review on snail cams as ino alot of poeple have problems with them. the review is based on my opinion and experiences with snail cams, but if you disagree feel free to say and may be i will change the review as hopefully it is hear to help anyone. i would recomend though if you do have a frame that will take chain tugs use them instead as snail cams are a nightmare.

try all/inspired : i did not get on these at all well, they are a night mareto use as when you tension the chain and then go to tighten up the axel bolts the snail cams do not stay in the same place they slip and the chain goes slack. and this is a problem as the is 2 snail cams and 2 bolts and you only have to hands. also when you are riding, by kicking on the pedals to get on to the back wheel the tension in the chain pulls the wheel forward on the right hand side as the snail cams slip, this can be very anoyin and leads to your tyre rubbing on your frame. a way to get round them sliping is to file notches into it, if done properly this will sort the problem out. but dont just take a file to it like i did as it doesn't work put some thought into it first.

fresh product snail cams : these work alot better than the smooth ones and dont slip as much but have done on me alot of times when riding still. there is a down side i have found to these though, the notches are to big and to few meaning that when you tension your chain the chain is either to slack or to tight because the notches are to wide.

monty snail cams (new ones) : at the moment this is what im using at the moment and have found these to be the best. unlike the fresh products ones they have smaller notchs and more of them making it alot easier to tension the chain properly. they also dont slip on me much if at all.

another way of tensioning is to use bmx style tensioners. these work really well but you have to make sure the screws dont start to screw into your dropouts as aliminium is a soft metal.

i have some monty snail cams, or rather had. mine were a little older say the original ones from my old x-lite lol, some thing david dickinson would be proud of selling. mind you they were crap, i tried all the obvious things to do with them but i guess they were just to old. i hope the latest snail cams are a lot better. good review matey, it's going to help me.

hi there

good review but i do have a different opinion i don't no about the monty snale cames but the fresh produc ones are a pain in the a*s i have tryall ones but i changed them to the fresh product ones and the wheel keept moving out and rubbing against the frame. so i switched back to tryall ones if u no how to use them you will be fine.

1. you need to loosen the left hand side (the one with out the sprocket) then the right.

2.then push the wheel all the way towards the front of the bike

3.slowly put a even amount of presure on the snail cams so it brings the wheel back (until the chain starts to get a bit tight)

4.you need to move the wheel in to place so it dosnt rub by moving the right or left cam individually until the wheel is in the right place

5.the tighten the right side bolt (the side with the sprocket) then the left you might need to hold the wheel in place while your tightend it

that should be it the chain will never stay really tight

thanks conor.

i do agree with you about the freshproduct ones my wheel also moved alot but i found the tryall/ inspired also to be bad aswell, but i do no of people who use them and they are ok such as tartydave. but he tightens his axel bolts extremly tight witch i dont believe is the best idea as axels such as the profile ones are aliuminium and could strip the threads. cheers for your opinion on the review anyway
