Overclocking My Graphics Card.....

ok so i have a Nvidia 6600 GT And when i first bought the card my friend overclocked it for me, it ran at 1.02 Ghz.

Now since then ive had my computer Rebooted, so the settings on the card have been reset back to normal speeds.

And i really want it overclocking back to the speed it was.

Could anybody give me a step by step guide of how to do it myself as i dont want to have to ask my friend to do it for me again, as he doesnt live local and it was a 1 off that he came round.

Thanks James.

It wont explode it'll just get too hot and stop working. Sometimes it will stop working and then work again once it cools back down. Other times it will be permenantly damaged.

If you start to see artifacts in the cards output (distorted or scrambled images etc) slow the clock speed back down straight away and you might get away with it.

I know you biff, and i've seen your computer, and if it's still the same, you will quad-ruple the speed you experience your computer running at by formatting it and re-installing windows fresh, without and of the spyware crap that currently resides on your computer.

How do I know if Im getting graphics Lag ect.

I have a ATi Radeon 9600 Pro (just read the box)

Will I notce better game play ect or anything from this.

I know my computer has plenty of cooling equipment so that shouldnt be an issue

It can still be an issue despite a lot of cooling equipment in the case. The hardest part of cooling the processor is getting the heat away from the chip. You have thermal paste to conduct heat the first 0.01mm without leaving any gaps to the fan case bottom, which is usually made of copper or some other heat conductive metal. The heat then spreads through this metal and is then dissipated by being bombarded by air from the fan.

Only then does any other cooling equipment come into play, by making sure that the air in your case is not all heated up too hot.

Serious overclockers sometimes use water (or other liquid) coolers, which are more effective at removing heat from the chip becasue they are more dense than air. It is akin to jumping into a swimming pool on holiday as opposed to a cool fan blowing on you. The pool cools you down quicker.

The bast was to speed up your games (if you're sure that your graphics card is the limiting factor, because it is by far not the only thing that can slow you down) is to buy a better more modern graphics card.

Ive got a 6800le and its definately worth it with that.

My 3dmark05 scores were...

2690 - Standard Speeds (300/700) and Pipelines

3834 - Standard Speeds (300/700) 16/6 Pixel/Vertex (Only certain cards can be unlocked like this)

4732 - Overclocked (410/800) 16/6 Pixel/Vertex

if your a novice to overclocking then set it to the auto detect optimal settings and if you want any more speed then slowely increase it 5mhz at a time until you get artifacting in games.

I can pretty much guarentee that it will only be the memory that went to over 1GHz, the core won't get anywhere near that.
