Wiring Hi Fi Speakers To Pc?

Recommended Posts

I dont fancy taking my TV or hi fi to uni, and want to use my PC to do everything (bought a TV/radio card, and want to wire up my hi fi speakers). Basically, ive got 2 nice gale speakers which have the standard input of 2 wires. My sound card has jack plug inputs and im wondering is there any way i can wire up my speakers to a jack plug? I could take one off an old set of headphones but im not sure how id wire the speakers up to it. Anyone know how this is done/if its possible?!

Cheers

Anyone used hi fi speakers and an amp, and found its a lot better than normal amplified pc speakers? Is it worth buying an amp for?

Depends how good the speakers + amp are...

When i hooked my pc up to our £1500 hifi for a laugh, yes it was substantially better than my £50 PC speakers, but that is to be expected... I should imagine if you get a good well matched amp to go with your speakers then they will sound great.

To wire the speakers to a jack (both 3.5mm or 6mm) it's fairly simple (from when I've needed a quick fix in the past anyway)

Best bet is to go to Maplins (or similar electronicsy shop) and purchase a 3.5-6mm converter, and open it up, as the size makes things a bit easier to play with/solder.

Once opened, you should find two seperate 'prongs', and from there you pretty much just need to solder one wire to each (as in, one wire of the two from each speaker)

Check it's working, then tape/shrinkwrap it up, and that should do you fairly nicely.

There is, however, probably a nice, tidier way to allow you to just pop the bare wires into something, allowing you to take them out for hi-fi use regularly too, but I haven't looked for it

Anyway, as said before, you'll more than likely need an amp, but that may help with the wiring issue

If not, ignore me ;)

***Mind you, head down to somewhere like PC World (but good) and you can get a half decent speaker set for around £20-£50 [depending on what you want] which should be more than adequate for your needs

Your signal source defines how good it will sound.

Ie ,is the audio signal fron your soundcard any good?

But yes, a reasonable amp and speakers are needed too!

Good point, im an idiot, haha.

it depends on your speakers and amp really. if you're lucky and have £1200 speakers and an amp to do them justice you're not going to find pc speakers that'll come anywhere close.

On the other hand, you can get fairly decent PC speakers these days as long as you're willing to fork out a bit of cash.

My gosh...

I cant imagine how good that must sound...

They sound absolutely incredible, i went round jons house with boumsong and he has some in a small room downstairs, all i can say is :o:-:D

IPB Image Thats the one i think, didn't have an automatic opening door though, you had to pull it out lol all that technology and expense and they cant even have an opening door :S

Could you not use the auxilary input on your hi-fi and then plug the pc into the aux inputs using the necessary cable, then all you'd need to do is switch the hi-fi to aux mode and your away. It'd still leave you with good speakers that you've already got and the functionality of your hi-fi for things like listening to the radio.

Chris' Naim hi-fi sounds amazing, dam staff discount

Get me a job at Naim Chris :-

As Kris said above those CD units have a slide door that you have to pull open, also there is a removeable magnetic puck that holds the CD in place. For any Naim audio questions I am sure that Chris the Naim audio lab rat can answer, he is such a geek :P

Best HiFi in the world?

I think not mate, there's italian speakers for stupid money - £34,000 a pair. Saw them at a trade show I went to.

Naim is good, don't get me wrong, but you can't call it best in the world. Best in the price range maybe yeah.

You say your "saw" them and they are £34.000,

next you will be telling me that you listened to them(for a long while) and then listened to naim speakers(for a long while) ?

But then i havent herd the italian ones , so its all preference anyway.
