JT!
Started getting into MTBing / XC (whatever it's called) more and more now. And my budget Trek isn't really upto the job.Really have no idea as what's good and what's not these days. Don't really have a strict budget, £400-£700 is the kind of range i'm looking for. I'd prefer to keep it below £600 if i can help it.I wouldn't mind a bike with rear suspension, but to get a decent bike with rear suspension i think i'd have to be paying £1,000 plus, i'd rather have a sore arse than pay £300 more for it. Heard a little able soft tails but i would have thought they'd just as expensive. So, i'm looking for a hardtail, with discs. Any suggestions? Thanks
Lawnmowerman
Go halfords and look at the carrera banshee, it's about £550 with £50 of free accessories of your choice. I would well get one if i could afford it, I sit at work and perv over it everyday hehe.

For that price range have a look at the new 07 specialized rockhoppers.Could also get a marin for that price..something like a northside trail or B-17. Trek also do a few good ones, the 6500sl (I think thats it) is pretty good for the price...

JT!
Cable discs. Looking for better braking over rear shock. Thanks anyway though.EDIT: The feel i get from bike with rear shock is that the rest of the componets are going to be cheaper. I'd much rather have good brakes and forks than a rear shock.Just looking at the rockhoppers now. Edited August 24, 2006 by JT!

I know its out of your price range but have a look at the Northside Trail and B-17 that are part of the same 'Trail Hardtail' range. They are built around the same frame.Link to the range

James_Porter
i have tried a few from the bike shop in swindon... if your lucky you might be able to find the 06 trek 8500... they retail at about £2000 i think but cause its the older model now you can find them for £1500... thats full xtr and a forking nice frame, fox forks. they have one in totalbike (swindon) which you can get for £1300 cause its ex demo, still pretty mint though. for full sus i would deffo look at the specialized xc pro... thats full sus with a fox shock with the 3 different settings, locked, pro pedal and soft. i hammered that for a week and fell in love... cant afford to buy it though:( which is a GAY. specialized are all you want to look at though for full sus IMO! thier warranty is awesome and the xc frames can take shit loads. James_Porter
specialized2234 i got the 03 (i think it was) version of this, really liked that, frames are really mint on them... componants wont need modding anytime soon on it either.5im not really into scott... but here is one you might be interested in...scottthere are a couple of kliens aswell which might be worth looking at, you would have to go for the older 05/06 models though which might be hanging around in bikeshops still, reduced obviously... but i think they will still be a bit more than you are looking at.couple of bikes to look at anyways... flipkickbs
Carerra fury, seriously good xc bike, and also copes with a lot of freeride stuff too. I just got one myself and its amazing to ride every time i go out on it. Really well built bikes, which also come with rock shox Tora forks (80-130 adjustable) and near enough lockout at 80mm. Pretty high end sram groupset, and a truvativ crankset. Pretty hard pushed to find something better at sub £600. Tomm
Cheers for those, i think it's either going to be a trek or specialized. The one thing that really bugs me about Specialized is their bloody stupid American name (with Z in it). Which is stupid because that would actually put me off buying one. (I want an XC bike )

Brisa
You wont go far wrong witht he rockhopper. We have sold a shed load of them and have had none back with any problems as such. Just the usual neglect cases. You would need to be quick to get an 06 one as the 07 stuff is out very soon (some stuff is out already) I am going to edinburgh on tuesday to get the low down on the new spech range so the rest of the range isn't far off.Where I work (NI's only spech dealer) have sold out of all 06 rockhoppers about 3 weeks ago and no more can be got from spech.
