Simon
Right, just got this router, but i think its the wrong one.Basically, i have a NTL set-top box, from that is the ethernet cable running to my pc network card. Can i plug the cable into the router, then another cable from router to pc, or does it HAVE to be ADSL in.As in, plug the ethernet into one of the 4 ports, or is that only out? Danny
That routers wrong. Your on cable not adsl.On a normal (without adsl modem) router you will have a 'Wan' socket where you plug the wire coming from your settop box / modem into. Krisboats
You should be able to let the router use an outgoing adsl line from you pc in order for it to gain access to the internet however you'll need to use the ICS (internet connection sharing) feature of xp however your pc will need to be on constantly for the router to have a connection and it will be marginally slower as the signals will have to travel through your pc first then the router then other computers connected to it.My grandads on ntl and he's got a little purple external broadband modem that has an adsl output socket on it for connecting to your router, do you not have one of those you can use? Danny
Right lets get this straight. ADSL - (BT, Wanadoo, Etc) Uses your phone line to access the internet. Cable - (NTL, Telewest) Uses the same Coaxal cable that your tv comes through. Your best sending that router back and getting one without an adsl modem in. Krisboats
I just re-read the question though and now i see what he's getting at. The ethernet ports on the router are all OUTPUT sockets. The ADSL socket is the line in for the router. If you had one of the NTL modems then it'd be fine but seeing as it isn't you will be easiest just exchanging it for an NTL compatible router. Simon
Not read any replies, but it works.Ethernet into one of the 4 ports, ethernet from port 2 to pc, then laptop on wireless.Works fine, i'm here and replying. Next problem, laptop connects to wireless fine, strength is excellent, but i can't browse the internet?
Danny
Another thing once you get the correct router is you will have to set it to clone the mac address of the current network card in your pc.To find that go...Start > Run > CMD > ipconfig /all > Physical address XX-XX-XX-XX-XXNot read any replies, but it works.Ethernet into one of the 4 ports, ethernet from port 2 to pc, then laptop on wireless.Works fine, i'm here and replying. Next problem, laptop connects to wireless fine, strength is excellent, but i can't browse the internet? For the reason above. A router has its own mac address (or one cloned off a network card). NTL, Telewest only allow one MAC address to access the internet (hence why a router will have its own address) and im guessing its not allowing the laptop as they way youve bodged it is sending the true mac address rather than the one of the router. Tomm
Can you clone the mac address of the laptop to the same as the PC in an effort to try and confuse NTL? Or will it not allow more than one mac of the same on the network? In other news: Routers with ADSL modems built in are usually £10-15 more expensive than just plain wireless routers (with an ethernet rj45 in for the NTL connection). Send this one back, get the proper one and save money. Duh!

Mr Plod
I'm with NTL and had broadband running through my Digital Set top box. To go wireless I just saved myself aload of hassle and bought the NTL recommended Actiontec router and stuff. Thing is... its £100 which is a bit steep and especially if you order another adaptor like I did for my brothers laptop. £44 quid for the adaptor! What a rip off!I have the same problem on my brothers laptop as Simon does where I installed my Adaptor that came with the original router start up package and its all connected properly yet I can't go on the internet. Its as if I don't have an internet connection. Any ideas as I have the new additional adaptor but don't want to open it up if its not going to work and I have to send it back. CheersP.S Sorry if this doesn't make sense but look at the time and I'm tired haha
