Any thermal paste will do. You must have a mate with a small sachet of paste that came with a heatsink or something. If not, just try a small computer shop. PC World probably won't do it, and if they do - they'll try and sell you a whole tube or something for an extortionate amount.

But do NOT run it dry without any paste. And make sure you've cleaned the surface before hand with some nail polish remover or something similar.

pc world do sell it like most pc shops do and like most pc shops they all sell it in small syringes, pc world do the aksas stuff for £5.99 but is not the best stuff in the world! get some artic silver from ebay or ocuk and put a small amount (size of grain of rice) and spread it out with a plastic card. and dont use any type of nail polish remover . . . make sure its alochol free (Y)

I used white spirit and kitchen paper (Y) done the trick

dry the cpu

then re-applying new paste I used a credit card edge to make as thin as possible film over the cpu (totally covering the area ofcourse)

so yeh my tip is use a credit card in reapplying :)

White Spirit CAN leave a grease behind (which might be what Stav was erring with nail polish remover). But I've used it quite a few times with no issue.

I've used nail polish remover (acetone) 5+ times on cpu's and have come across no side effects from doing so. Just make sure you use a lint free cloth coaked very lightly in the nail polish remover and only you on top of cpu, try to avoid getting it on the sides. Then leave to dry and apply your new paste (Y)

yep thats what i have heard that it will leave a grease behing, its best using the proper stuff as i use to use alochol nail polish remover and when i started using the proper stuff it would give me at least 5 degree C difference on the temp but as i water cool and overclock heavily i need that extra 5 degree less :Plol just make sure u leave it to dry and there is no residue left and u'll be fine, excuse me for all the miss understanding!

Pure alcohol would be a good cleaner as it would evaporate in seconds but i think the most pure stuff you can get is 60-70%ish. Nail polish remover is full of contaminents such as coloring and something to change the smell hence it leaves a residue behind.

I use a can of stuff i got from maplin called 'contact cleaner' as it says on the can it leaves no residue and a few cotton wool buds.

isopropanol , we use it on electrics and shizzle in work. good cleaning agent and evaporates quickly.

I was about to suggest the same thing :P But not everyone has it lying around the house.

I've got some of that Akasa Tim cleaner for use around the office. Has a lovely citrus smell :D
