Has anyone seen my shoe?
Righto, my computer was brokeded again (like the 8th time in 2 years) so my parents have bought a new one, meaning I get this one in my room. Now I want internet on this computer but the fact that my room and the computer room are on opposite sides of my house makes it hard.So wireless is an option, I was just wondering what id need.At the moment I have a 4mb (i think) broadband connection, using a standard NTL modem connected though USB.I would like the cheapest I could get but if I need certain things I am willing to pay more. Thanks in advance. froggy
Cheapest and most crappest option is a rate long RJ45 cable going from one computer to another.Second cheapest would be to scrap your modem and buy a router and have a wire running room to room I reakon that would cost around 20 quidThird option is a wireless router and a wireless dongle which would cost around 60 squids
Has anyone seen my shoe?
YAR, i was looking at going wireless (using a router and all that jazz) because of the aforementioned distance.£60 you say, ill be damned if some stupid company charges me that much.... Although it loads pages and scrips diffrently. Nothing noticably diffrent. If you say you have 4mb then it wont be a problem at all.http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/^^ test your speed

Extreme_biker0
If I understand you correctly, you already have the internet in one of your computers, but none of them are wireless capable?Buy 2 wireless dongles or cards (i believe cards are cheaper) (1 for each computer). Thats your wireless network between the computers. You can then share the internet connection over the network. Here are the cards at £12.50. You need one of these for each computer you're going to connect to the network. You don't have to bother with a wireless router or any of that stuff. That's how mine is set up, and there are no problems at all. If you need help configuring the network i'll help, but with the standard windows software its a piece of cake. Extreme_biker0
So having two cards or dongles works? Yeah, its called an ad-hoc network (one without a router)(functions in exactly the same way)My car's pda has wireless and connects to the network without a problem from outside on the drive. That's through a couple of walls and about 20 m.Also I can detect other peoples wireless networks.I wouldn't have thought there would be any problems as long as you don't live in a huge mansion. Or have 5 microwave ovens all on the go in between the two points. Edited August 20, 2006 by Extreme_biker0

Spikenipple
The only problem with having just 2 wireless dongles between the computers is that the computer which hosts the internet will have to be on if you want to go on the internet on your computer, therefore if your modem has an ethernet port, you should buy a little 4 port ethernet hub and plug in the modem and 2 pcs to that, then cable tack an STP cable all the way to your room. stav
dont buy usb dongles as advised as having to power them via usb reduces the signal at which they connect so if you are giong to play multi player games you will probably get packet loss on them, this is what i have seen from mostly every wireless network i have setup ( have done lots before) if i was you i would get decent wireless router (not belkin) and a wireless pci-cardStav
Danny
First things first see if the modem has an ethernet port.If it does buy yourself a proper wireless router none of this ad-hoc rubbish. If you have the router sat next to one pc you connect that via cable rather than having to buy a wireless card.
Extreme_biker0
buy yourself a proper wireless router none of this ad-hoc rubbish Ad-hoc is part of 802.11 for a reason. If one of your computers is already connected to the internet, why buy an expensive piece of equipment to route the internet connection basically from the wall to the computer? Have your connected computer act as the router, it makes more sense. You talk as if ad-hoc is somehow not as good as an infrastructure (router-based) network. For your information, they function in exactly the same way.The only consideration is that your connected computer has to be turned on to act as the router. Extreme_biker0
No, it wouldn't. But for what it would cost for a router (£60?? i don't know) you can buy enough electricity to power your computer for a long time. I turn the screen off only when i'm not using it.I suppose not everyone uses computers in the same way.
