hi fellow riders.

i have a friend that is an experianced engineer and this winter we are going

to have a crack at making a frame.we will be using steel tubing to start with

and if we get a good design we will use more expensive material.we have all

of the necassary tools and machines available to us but need some ideas.

:) so my question is,

what do you think an ideal stock geometry would be? what wheelbases,

chainstay legths, headtube angles, bb rises, frame heights etc , etc

would you have and why?

many thanks, max... ^_^

Catch me on MSN, use to work for Bristol Bike Worksho and Argos Racing Cycles making frmes to order!

I also use to run my own shop doing bespoke custom frames

Curretly working on a new one for my self but with big twist in the onon confomal design of todays moden rididng style or frame atrabities

Catch me on MSN, i never actually worked for Bristol Bike Workshop or Argos Racing Cycles making frames to order! but i say a lot of bullshit on this forum, when im not gapping 200ft static or sidehopping up multi story car parks on my bike that i got from my sponsorship deal with "a french bike company"

I also use to run my own shop doing bespoke custom frames (never happened

hey thire,

i think you should make the frame nerly the same lenth of the CZAR IVAN and have chris king hubs and try all head set and front disc brake or hs33's and a nice sliver coat will make it look good maybe koxx handel bars or onza and some good try all tyre's it would look a very good bike i think and i think it would sell.

cheers

luke :)

isn't the idea of a custom frame, to have 'custom' geometry?

you should be deciding on how you want it to ride.....

what tubing are you going to be using

are you going to be brazing or tig welding?

also remeber you have the jib/fixture to think about when making a frame also, possible heat treatment.....

is that readily available in your area?

good luck anyway and post pics when you have finished your project!

ok dont slate me if you dont like my idea but why not pick out a bunch of frames and kinda mix them up for example:

xtp headtube

coust middle (with the three seat tube bits)

ashton seat cover

374mm C/S

20mm bb rise

colour- white with light blue stickers

could be fun on what kinda frame you would come up with but like i said it was only a suggestion and it would be pretty fun photo shoppin all the frames into one

yes and it will be copper braized as it is steel tubing.i just wanted to ask around to people for input and to help me make good features.and yes everything is available.yes chris 175 mm is a tad short haha

the majouity of you seem to say keep the frame long n low (Y) so i think ill go around that no higher bb than + 20/25mm about 1090 wheelbase.

thanks everyone. ;)

and oh yer rick cant do an xtp hedtube the cnc work will cost lots and its steel anyway! haha.where do you think the brake mounts should be? is there any advantage of them being on the chainstay..

thanks...

I don't think it would be possible to put the brakes on the chainstays due to the chain being so close, i don't think it will fit. maybe mount them under the seat stays this would look cool and also be very original. hope this helps, adam (Y)

sounds like a good idea matey. Hmm a high bb is generally good just watch out for the rear brake as when you sidehop you tend to catch your ankle on the rear brake if the bb is high enough. The rear should have a wide enough gap to fit a 50mm rim in there with plenty of room for the brake to sit flush on a new set of pads and work well. The front should be high enough for riders not to hit there legs whilst gapping or sidehoping, but not to a stupid height. Obviously if you make the rear wide your gonna have to make a wide bb setup bare in mind the longer the bb is the weaker it will be as there is more force working on a more strectched out area leading to more parts failing. I think a great idea would be to weld a plate on The left hand side of the rear of the frame to stop the dents and scrappes that come with failing a sidehop as this will increase durability. Just remember the certain clearance issues you have to go around and have a blast giving it a go mate i will be trying this idea out as soon as i got some time in the engineering shop keep us updated matey.
