Finger Positioning

Ah, slightly disappointed that it's this after a topic called "finger position", but I guess now I'm here... :-

Most people ride one finger covering the brakes (front and rear) all the time. This way you can always grab a handfull (well, the aforementioned finger-full anyway) if you should need to.

Some guys ride two fingers, which is down to personal preference, but you don't have so much holding the bars to lift/pull with

If im going to rear wheel cover the rear only with 1 finger pulled in so your close to the locking point

(i have shitty brake mean i have to pull quite a lot :Plol)

but obiously if your going to front wheel cover your front brake

no point covering your front brake if your going to rear wheel might as well have a betta grip on it

in an emergancy jump off lol

in reply to Tim, msn not working at the moment due to new version of msn not accepting my address, but no doubt it will be sorted soon. I have ridden with them once but it was kind off a learning session for me personally. I'll keep you posted, if i can't get it to work i'll use my brothers.

PS: What is your msn address?

Okay I set my rear brake lever almost vertically down (180') to the bars so that when im on the back wheel, which I use the rear brake the most when I'm on the back then the brake is almost at a 90' angle (sort of)

If you have your lever at a 90' angle on the bars then when your on the back wheel the levers going to pretty much sticking up vertically in the air.

Sorry, I made a hash of it, but thats what i was getting at.

okay right i can pretty much brake with one finger, but the brake is not strong enough, I have hs11 brakes and i have read that alot of people use hs33. Can hs11 be ajusted to be stronger or should i just buy hs33. if so how much??

Thanks! Lewis (Y)

Try and get your self a set of second hand hs33 levers, the calipers are exactley the same on both models.

Other than that you could trycleaning your rim and pads, grinding your rim or getting better pads....

Definetely have a finger covering each brake lever all the time. I suppose if it feels more natural not to cover both levers then do that but its not going to be as safe.

There aren't that many occasions when you might not suddenly need the front brake. Furthermore, only using one finger ensures you have a lot of grip on the bar and therefore getting better control of the bike.

Make sure your finger is at the end of the brake lever as opposed to the middle or further. By doing this I radically improved my brake performance as a result of having double the leverage. Also a finger at the end of the lever can avoid pinching your middle finger between the brake lever and the bar.
