CurtisRider Posted August 17, 2006 Report Share Posted August 17, 2006 righty, managed to aquire some alloys for my car, but 2 of the tyres are verging illegal so i wanna replace them what makes are good? and what should i not go for?so far ive had the offer of 30quid for a budget tyre, 42 for firestone, 46 for veredestein, 48 for pirelli (i think that was it), and 60 for michelinnow, do i get what i pay for? coming from tractors, i know firestone are wank, and that pirelli and veredestein are darn good, but we are talking cars here, so its likely they arent as bad at car tyres my old wheels just use the standard budget tyres, and to be quite honest, they are quite good, but i can make them squeal a little easily if i push a corner, but they never seem to slip out, however, if spending an extra tenner or so per tyre will get me fag loads better grip and a better wear rate, then so be it the cars a vauxhall cavalier hatchback, 1.7td, and i dont generally drive fast, but i want the reassurance i can can grip if i turn into a fast tosser if thats of any significance cheers babes Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Not a PATCH on my yokohoma a539's!! there awsome, quiet, grips emense, mass's of tread from new, will last ages.You can throw these into a corner and they won't slip at all! i took a sharp 90 degree turn at 30 and my mini did'nt slip at all. Specially when it comes to brakes and tyres.I some Michelins put on my old car, pricey, but good. After all, your life depends on four bits of very small rubber. nmt_oli Posted August 18, 2006 Report Share Posted August 18, 2006 I'd just get the budget tyres on offer If I was a racing driver then it would matter, but I'm interested in driving from A to B a reasonable speed and safely.SteveIf your interested in safety, you wont be getting the cheapest nastiest budget tyres! they are possibly THE most important thing on the car in terms of safety, and choice could be the different between crashing or not.in the UK climate, and with it coming up to winter definately get tyres that work well in the rain. in the dry most tyres grip well, and i would sacrifice a bit of dry grip and wear for wet grip any day. i have had some sketchy understeer moments, and there not fun!IMO the uniroyal rainsports are the best all round tyre for british winter, and what, if i can afford it, i will put on my 2nd hand alloys before fitting them to my car. ( if i cannot afford, i will leave the brand new budget tyres on there, as they will be better than nearly worn out budget tyres).Toyo proxes, although a big name ( and remember the price that comes with it) are surprisingly slippy in the wet, despite the excelent dry grip. i have heard bad stories (although i belive prawn thinks fairly highly of his on his A3).When i had a customer enquie if we could get a certain tyre on some alloy at work, i spoke to one of the hugh uyp guys at Rimstock, a mojor alloy wheel distributor, and they said they would reccomend the uniroyal everytime for the road, unless it was a trackday car- in which case the toyos. Prawny Baby Posted August 19, 2006 Report Share Posted August 19, 2006 Toyo proxes, although a big name ( and remember the price that comes with it) are surprisingly slippy in the wet, despite the excelent dry grip. i have heard bad stories (although i belive prawn thinks fairly highly of his on his A3).ill have to agree with that one there oli.... the toyos ove got on my a3 arnt nearly as good in the wet as the eagle F1's my dad has, or the michelin pilot sports my mum has........the toyos rule in the dry, and are not bad in the wet, provided you 'understand' them well, and drive accordingly, assuming understeer.ive gotta say steve-im really surprised you go for budget tyres!budget on everything else by all means, but tyres are really not something you ever want to skimp on.its not so much about you driving at silly speeds.... but what iv your going round a corner in the dry, that your familiar with, and theres a water spill across the road? or a patch of oil? its times like that that you need REALLY good tyres, you can still drive fast on budget tyres, as you know how much tehy can handle....its the situations you DONT expect that require the best rubber!for that reason there are better tyres on my mums car than on either mine or my dads, despite her car being slower, and her driving slower than either of us. she also has uprated brake discs and pads for the same reason!its just saftey.oli- those rainsports actually look VERY nice, whats the wear rate like on them? its a lovely tread pattern!NGLV Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
