sir trial a lot
Hey Dave, first of all, well done mate You can drive me to glenn tress (sp?) now if you like My brother, as you will probably know, has got a Pug 106, 1.1, Its fairly quick and was pretty damn cheap for him to insure. Most small cars are ok. Just go with which one takes your fancy
Caleb
i either wanted a mini or a pug 306, but opted out for the 306 due to been less work and atm thats what i want, id love a mini in the future though when i have a bit of land
Prawny Baby
sadly its not possible to get a quick car thats cheap to insure at all.they are ALL slow, just to various degrees.choose cheap and slow, or fast and expensive.....as for quickER cheap run arounds, the ford ka is pretty nippy for what it is, a mini 1000 is the time honoured classic, and handles incredibly as we all know, and is more fun per £1 than anything on the road.a 106/saxo (basicly the same car) does the job ok, but to be honest are poorll designed and poorly made.of course, if your 5ft4 and have legs which are strangely offset to one side, and wear size 4 shoes, it could be right up your street....otherwise dont bother.if you want something that will last, and take abuse, look at small VW's, such as polos, older ones are solid and cheap to buy, later ones are pretty modern, and equally as solid, and they all go on forever.fiesta's tend to not be too bad really, i know its a cheap ford, but id take one over a french small hatch anyday, theyre not massively interesting, but theyre made well enough and seem to drive alright.then theres always the 1.2 corsa..... a really good little car ruined by the worlds most annoying steering rack.....meh.theres so much out there.insurance wise, anything over a 1.3 will probably sting on insurance. Trials Dave
thanks prawn for taking the time out to tell me. i appreciate that.funnily enough i did notice when i sat in a saxo that the pedals were right over to one side!quite weird.i am also about 6ft 3!!!hehe
Smo™
My first car (Vauxhall Corsa 1.0l 12v) has been a fantastic little motor. It's not fast at all (obviously) but it's been mechanically sound and never let me down, never had a single problem with it. It's insurance group 1 as well so nice and cheap, very good on petrol and tax/parts etc.
Trials Dave
yer that sounds pretty damm good!any ideas on how much im gonna get stung on the insurance?i am 17 aswell!i cant see this being cheap. lets hope i dont break any bike bits.hehe

It's insurance group 1 as well so nice and cheap, very good on petrol and tax/parts etc.corsas are actually really good!its just the awfull steering rack that puts me off, and ruins what could be an otherwise rewarding driving experience.in an attempt to make the car city friendly, without fitting power steering, the steering is geared VERY low, so its easy to turn when static for parking, but takes about 9 turns to go from lock to lock! which means simple 90degree turns around town involve a massive movement of the wheel.if you do go for a corsa, i would reccomend the 1.2 8 valve version over the 1.0 12v, as the 1.0 is a 3 pot motor, and seems quite rough compared to the 4pot 1.2. the 1.2 seems like a more refined engine
Hobnobs
Agreed. Despite not being that nippy, theyre still fun.The corsa that is. Mines a 1.2 beast, love it. Edited August 16, 2006 by Hobnobs
David
Do insurance prices differe much between age. As in would it be any cheaper for an 18 year old to insure a first car than a 17 year old?

onzatprodude
i dont think so they just get every company to sponser? (give them money) so when you ring confused up all random companys names are there.. there will be an odd few that confused wont search for you (less popular companys) but to add ther extra on would be a bit silly as you could just ask confused for the cheapest and ask who its off (ie:tescos) then ring tesco's up both my mam and dad rang confused and got there insurance alot cheaper than usual
N.Wood
I found it useful to have a look around and find any car (not neccesarily for sale) that you think fits the bill, write down the regestration, and whack that into confused.com/whatever you use. As some cars can have the same engine, but one will be classed as a higher risk than the other, making it more expensive.

yoyoyo
When i pass my test (Hopefully in the not too distant future) i'm looking to get a mini.Only just over a grand for a decent one, and under nine hundred on insurance. Thats with mods on as well. So to me it looks an excellent first car, might have a spot of trouble getting a bike in it.

So to me it looks an excellent first car, might have a spot of trouble getting a bike in it. Notrouble getting a bike in, as long as you keep standard front seats. In my dads mini, i can take front wheel off, open door, tip seat forward and put the bike in across the back seat with room to spare (26" bike). Bigman
Ford Escort, find a goodun and it will be a relitively cheap run around, i know of one with 150 genuine miles on the clock that i am willing to let go for £600 with tax and MOT I have had mine for just over 2.5 years, done about 40,000 miles on the beast and it hasn't "realy" given me any trouble.....They may not be the fastest, or best looking of cars but they are practical and can be found cheap Adam
