Spoke Tension

Hey all,

right the problem i have is this...

When i pedal hard it pulls the rim to one side slightly and rubs on the brake pad. Very annoying. The spokes on one side of the wheel do feel looser than the other, but if i tighten them up won't it permantly pull the wheel to one side? Do i have to loosen the other side first??

Any help would be great,

ta.

Tension the spokes on the other side by 1/4 a turn, and the spokes on the same side need to be loosened the same amount. As OBM says, miss anyout and enjoy your screwed wheel.

wow that was quick, thanks for the help (Y)

funny, the guy who explained me before told me something about tentioning only half of the spokes...

mayb its a good thing that i didnt understand :P

Probably not, 'cos that's gonna move the rim across a fair way. One full turn on a spoke will move it quite a bit, and that's what you're doing if you're loosening one side half and tightening the other half, basically. What hub are you using?

A lot of the time 'cos of the way the wheel's held in place you won't find the crack 'til you strip it down. Someone recently put up a post similar to this and it was just that their axle had snapped. The best way to find out is to just strip it all down (Y)

Make sure your spokes aren't obviously loose or anything first though.

Sounds a lot more like an axle/hub/dropout area problem than a spoke problem to me.

While we're on the subject, how the hell does one know when spokes are too tight? I just destroyed two of the heftiest DT spokes money can buy (bad-but-not-world-ending landing, both were drive side and at right angles to each other), and I'm wondering if I'd done them up too tight. But then of course I'd have to have the non-drive side even looser, and it's too loose for my liking already (muy spokes are a bit short and there's not a lot of thread in the nipples on that side).

To be honest, you're unlikely to get them too tight unless you go mental. How old were the spokes that snapped? When I started breaking spokes left right and centre on my back wheel, it was as a result of my 5 year old spokes (5mm too long for the build :P) just dying. Are your's new-ish or pretty old?

pretty much brand spanking from CRC. 'twas a new 32h Sun Rhyno Lite on Hope XC. My first wheel, built as per Sheldon Brown's site.

They snapped at the hub end.

Ideas, anyone? I'm pretty convinced that it wasn't a hard enough impact to break two of them simultaneously like that. I've landed way harder than that before now on said wheel.
