Cheap shit can still last OK if you just use it all carefully. So if you're undoing a tight bolt/doing up a bolt, just make sure you keep a lot of pressure going down the shaft of the allen key into the head of the bolt so it doesn't have the chance to slip and strip the head of the bolt/rape the allen key.

The top tool you highlighted is just a pin tool for undoing lockrings. I think the bottom one is like a third hand tool, but I'm really not too sure about that. We had a similar tool at our bike shop and I just used it for random shit I doubt it was designed for (even as a chain tensioner once :P)...

Top one for freewheel lockrings??

It'll last, but every bolt head/thread on your bike won't.

I think the top one is more likely to be a circlip plier and with regard to the tools destroying his bolt's and such, your saying that those tool's are made out of higher quality material then his componentry. In my experiance of cheap tools, they are usually made out of cheese, and as such they will break before any bolt's become rounded.

I thought Lidl is only in Germany

Imo there is no need to buy an expensive tool kit from ParkTool or whatever, unless you work at a bike shop and need the tools every day. The only quality tools I'd buy is a bb tool with a good wrench, a crank puller, spoke key and maybe a chain link extractor. All the other tools can be of a minor quality - depends on how often they're used though... But I've been using mine for several years and never had a problem with them.

Word. Parktools allen key tool, decent mid-size adjustable, my little dinky CoolTool adjustable, good cable cutters, good chain-tool, spoke key, crank extractor, screwdrivers on my Specialized EMT tool and a hammer are usually in my tool kit, along with 3 Rob Warner pedals, 2 inner cages from some VPs, and a well old crank arm :P

I used to take spare f**king everything with me if I was going on a 'real' ride. Spare pads, spare bit of hose, spare 4-bolt Magura bolt, spare grips (), spare links, etc.

Since then I just slimmed it down so I might take my Specialized EMT tool with me, but that's about it...

If you're wondering if there's a LIDL near you:

http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c....ice.s.sts.index

Looks a good way to get started with a selection of tools for the price of a couple of some of those. Some may break prematurely, but others may be perfectly good.

I'd buy it if I hadn't already built up a collection of tools.

you guys are right about which high quality tools to have...my roommate has a toolset very similar to this, and the spoke wrench and bb tool are complete shit. tolerances are all off on the spoke wrench, and the bb tool comes out of the splines very easily, ruining the bb/tool interface.

One cheap leatherman copy (motorway services, fiver with a multi-head screwdriver set)

One cheap multi-allen key type jobby (fiver, LBS)

One half-decent spoke key (can't remember, but not a lot, LBS)

One draper Puncture kit (LBS again, probably more expensive than most kits, but the only tyre levers that I ain't broken yet)

This lot has lasted me years. Apart from the 4 leatherman's that I've lost at work, anyway. Plus it's all pocket stuff, none of this massive toolkit to hump around. OK, so once in a blue moon you might need some of the other stuff, but that's what mates are for ;)

(although I do have a reasonable quality full toolkit at home)

And it's been about 7 or 8 years since I rounded/stripped a bolt/thread on my bike (and that was a really shit plastic (!) nut on my Monty's BB. Then again, said BB was made by a company called 'FAG', so I probably should have known better).

OK, so I have one dodgy spoke nipple right now, but that's my own fault for using the wrong slot on t' spoke key (which is now taped over to prevent that happening again).

Common sense is a far better tool than some expensive Park bollocks when fixing a bike (Y)

I went to Lidls yesterday for the first time ever (it was cos we were camping in Eastbourne...) and thats the funniest shop i've ever been into.

How people buy their food from there, i have no idea.

Cheap cider though. Cheap everything actually.

And thoughtfully named condoms - 'Eruption'

Nice tool kit. I can also reccomend their plates and chocolate covered raisins.

Doesn't look too bad that.

Even Park Tool stuff can break. We found this out at work, raping one of those huge BB tools with the handles, breaking chainwhips...

Halfords Bikehut tools aren't bad. I bought them 'cause I get it on discount :P

But the Allen keys I got are really good, nice length, none have rounded to date.

I got a multi-tool aswell, which has allen keys, T25? torx bit (for Rotor bolts) chaintool.. *

Everything else I use ParkTool.

* I am in no way advertising Halfords here, I am merely making a suggestion of budget priced tools for members of this forum.

I am only suggesting Halfords tools becuase I have only had experiance with these, cheap shit, and Park Tool.

:P
