hey iv been riding for 8 month now and iv just bled my maguras with water, although they wrok abit quicker , iv herd that they will freez in the winter months :( , now we all no water expands when it freezes (N) so shouldnt this break my seals and pistons ? and also the water may make them rust.

any who just wondering if anyone could put me on the right tracks of how to bleed them properly with mineral oil :)

thanks , marc :)

Nothing will rust. All the insides of Magura HS33/HS11s and plastic.

The oil that you're supposed to bleed it with just cleans up the seals etc, that's why when you took all the old oil out, it was all black and crappy, instead of the blue 'Royal Blood' mineral oil that was first put in it.

Water works fine. I use it in my Magura.

It has froze in the winter, but I just left it in the living room overnight, and it was back to water, and felt better.

Put some anti-freeze in there, or use Mineral oil. (Y)

thanks for the replies , i think im going to go with the anti freeze option because it probably bleeds the same was as water in a bucket and i like the feel of water on my brakes, you got a better feel to the brake :)

thanks, marc ;)

I've started to use water and it's much much better. Much easier to bleed, cheap, clean when it leaks. Can't really see any dissadvantages apart from it freezing, but a little anti freeze will stop that. (Y)

I just use water and anti freeze, you can buy it pre-mixed from shops, well thats atleast what i do, i get a massive big tub for about £3, but i just use standard water throught the months thet are not going to freeze, then from october to end of january i use mixed water and anit-freeze, still it makes my brake no better or worse. Not sure if this helps but i read on the heatsink website that you can use baby oil, like the johnson's stuff as it is much cheaper and exactly the same as expensive branded oil for the brakes.

:ermm: its not the same thowouldnt catch any one rubbing royal blood in to ther babys skin........

just bleed with water and anti freeze (Y) brakes with oil in feel wank imo

cheers padarik

Water works really well. (Y)

But you have to bleed them more often (about once a month) because water has tiny particles of air dissolved in it and they all join together and rise to the top and make your brake feel spongy.

This can be prevented by leaving the water you are going to use to stand for a while at room temperature before you use it. :D

There was mutterings in some mags about the use of water! Water is thinner than the mineral oil in maggies and the seals are designed to cope with mineral oil, hence the brakes leak more often. Used water in mine for a while and it bid need topping up every now and again! But wether it did any damage to the seals i dont no. Got oil in there now and it seems fine! So i wouldnt have thought so!
