A teenager died when the handlebar of his bike went through his heart in a freak accident.

The 15-year-old boy was riding his BMX near the paddling pool in Markeaton Park, Derby, with a group of friends when the tragedy happened at 7.30pm on Saturday. A member of the public called an ambulance and the youngster was taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary but died later that evening.

Police do not know what caused the accident. A spokesman said: "We will be carrying out a full accident scene investigation similar to a road traffic accident to determine how it happened.

"He was with a group of friends at the time. Initial inquiries suggest the boy was not riding quickly."

A postmortem was due to take place later today and the coroner for Derby and South Derbyshire has been informed.

A spokeswoman for Derby City Council, which is responsible for the park, said a park ranger who was on site was aware of what had happened and saw the ambulance arriving.

He said: "He opened the Kedleston Road entrance, which is normally closed, so the paramedics could get to the scene quickly.

"We are co-operating with the police to help with their inquiries.

"It's a terrible incident and our thoughts go out to the boy's friends and family."

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the accident.

They are asked to call police on 0845 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

RIP :(

"...Initial inquiries suggest the boy was not riding quickly...."

Well us trials riders should be fine then allright then :ermm: . Seems a bit naive to associate riding slowly with safety . Must have taken an incredible impact to pierce the sternum or push ribs aside , my condolences .
