trials_noob
Hi everyone,I am new here and more importantly new to trials. At easter i saw Ryan Leech doing a show in Whistler and i think that got me wanting to do trials.I have tried searching for info but i cant seem to find the info specific to me so any help would be great. The main thing i need to get sorted is a bike but my problem is i have a low budget of about £250-£300 which makes my choices very difficult. I will be riding mainly street if you need to know that. I have looked at the t-vee which is in my budget as a mod but if i want a stock i think i'll need to go second hand. What would you recommend? And my other choice is mod or stock, i searched on this and it seems its preference and you show try both types before buying. I don't think i am able to try out a mod as i don't know anyone with one which is a bit of a bummer. So anyway what would be the recommendation between mod or stock for a newbie to trials to learn on quicker? I currently ride a stock xc bike. Thanks for any help
Tom_
hello welcome to the forum. I think you can get a saracen stock new in your budget althogh you could get a better speced bike second hand, so I would have a look in the for sale section. However if your from canada shipping will be a problem, so you could also look in your area. As for the Mod or Stock question as you are from a mountain biking bacground and ride mostly street I would recommend a stock, as they are more suited to street than the more pure trials style Mods. trials_noob
I am in Scotland, i was in Canada on holiday Would i find riding a mod difficult as i am used to stock bikes or would it just be a case of getting used to it? How easy is it to interchange your riding between both styles of bike?thanks
Guest
I am still a begginer and my first trials bike was a onza t-vee i think they are great starter bikes and were great for my low budget aswell. If there is any bike that i could recomend it would be a t-vee. Hope that did help.Happy riding, Alex
trials_noob
Thanks for the help.Does anyone know how easy it is riding a mod if you are used to a stock? It'd just that mods suit my budget much better so i am starting to favour them. Unless i can get a good deal on a second hand stock.

Tom_
I am from a mountain bike background and started riding a mod bike. I was alright at it i supose but it took a while to learn things as its all different, because the bike felt completly different to any other bike I had riden. Then recently I switched to stock and have progressed alot quicker than on my mod. I think this is because it is similar to the other bike I ride. I have also recently had a go on a couple of my freinds mods and did not like them. Also some people find it easier than others to swap between bikes. If I were you I would try and get along to a ride somewhere and try both size of bikes, then decide which suits you best.
trials_noob
Thanks for the help everyone. I doubt i will be able to try out the bikes before i buy which is annoying so i am going to have to guess which will be best. I suppose i could always sell it on if i didn't like it. Money is the main problem as bikes don't come easily on a tight budget. What are the main pros and cons with mods and stocks?

trials_noob
Thanks for that! What would you guys recommend for a beginner on a small budget for a mod bike and a stock bike? Just so i can compare them. Also how reliable are second hand bikes? As i may consider buying one as the bikes seem good at reasonable prices.CheersI am still a begginer and my first trials bike was a onza t-vee i think they are great starter bikes and were great for my low budget aswell. If there is any bike that i could recomend it would be a t-vee. Hope that did help.Happy riding, AlexHow quickly did you improve on the t-vee? Do they ride well and have sharp brakes? Tom_
My freind rides a t-vee and hes alrite but he does not progress to quickly. Looking at your budget I would say that the t-vee is the only new mod you could get. Maybe try and strech to a t-bird. As for stock you could get a saracen mad http://www.bikes4trials.com/products.php?p...ials/Jump_Bikes which is not to bad, I hear. As for second hand bikes just try and get someone who nos a bit about trials bikes to give you a hand looking at specs etc. and avoid anything that is cracked.p.s sorry about the link im not sure how to make it a single word hyperlink Edited August 6, 2006 by tom132
ruckus_street
I've started on a tvee and am loving it, i know it has relatively crap brakes, parts, frames probably not the best, and the pedals mite as well be made of greasy iceBut all that aside, i still LOVE riding it!!!If u do get one, keep an eye on the internal headset though, seems to need tightenin up pretty often, and seriously buy new pedals, as ur feet jus seem to float right off them, but thanks to the lack of grippy bits on them, they dont do anywher near as much shin damage as my outland magnesiums on my mountainbike!Whatever bike you decide to start on, once u learn the basics, you wont look back, ur back, hands (thanks to naff grips), shins, and other assorted damagable parts may disagree though! trials_noob
Thanks for the help everyone! That's answered most of my questions.I reckon i will go for a mod as they are cheaper and most people seem to think you learn on them quicker, so i'll give it a shot. ZHI-sam
heyy,i ride a stock bike at the minute and they feel very comfotable in my opinion. mainly due to the size of them and the fact that most people prefer 26'' bikes to 20''. a have riden a mod bike however and found they are alot easier to pedal kick and throw around due to the weight of the bike and its size. im about 6 foot 2 and i found it an ok size so hight isnt realy an issue. it all depends what you would prefer. look around on ebay and the forum for a good deal on a cheap okish spec bike. if you choose a mod then check out this thread(link to mods) and if stock try this (link to stock bike 1) or (link to stock bike 2)hope i helpedsamp.s heres a pic of my bike while riding
