Onzaallen
Hello, I just bought some second hand echo lite, and the steerer has been cut and i am sure the guy i bought them off said that it hadn't been. But anyway, i went to put my stem on and it fits about half way over the steerer but the other half of the stem it not touching the steerer at all therefor i can't get the stem cap on . So i am wondering does it really matter if the stem is not on all the way on and my stem cap is not on? Will this cause any problems, will it weaken by bars and stem as they are not being supported my anything? will it bend my forks if i hit something like a step to hard?I really don't want to have to buy another set of forks as i don't have any spare money.Does any one have an suggestions as to what to do? Am i going to have to get a new set of forks? Thanks, Allen Edited August 4, 2006 by Onzaallen

Mr Dave
ive ran some forks, when they were half way up the stem, its not advisable, but you might be able to get away with it, only with a headlock though!, i def wouldnt use it with no top cap. have a look at your headset set-up, see if theres any bits you can file down slightly just to let the stem sit further down.failing that, you could look at a new stem, thats a bit smaller on the clamping bit. would be cheaper than buying new forks.but yeah, as has been said, you should buy some new forks really defo if you do big stuff.an internal headset is where the headset, is inside the frame. like the new onza t-rex.you cant put a internal headset in a normal frame.the top cap bolting into the forks , i think your talking about a star nut. which is hammered down into the fork steerer, then theres thread in the middle. but you wanna get a headlock, which goes from the top cap to the bottom of the forks, this will give the stem a bit more suport.Dave Edited August 4, 2006 by Mr Dave
Onzaallen
ok, so what stem is a lot lower than the creak cane that comes on the 04 t-pro?I really do not want to have to buy some more forks.Yeah i was thinking of filing down but it will still be to high so i thought if i did file i would lose money when i sold it to fund a new stem if you get me. Mr_Pitbull
f**k it, be Rate!. Thats how my mates cut them down so they go up to the bottom stem bolt and not the top . lol its not half as Dangerous as what i did, started cutting my new forks down, realised i cut them FAR too short half way through! decided to start cutting at the top leaving a massive hax saw cut pretty lower in my steerer! Trust me it will be alright.
David20
Why not try one of the monty stems with the sloping stem cap allen? maybe the top bolt will catch the steerer with one of those as there is a much smaller distance between the two bolts EDIT: beat you to it allen \/\/ Edited August 5, 2006 by David20
Onzaallen
ok, that^^ sounds a bit on the dangerous side lol.I have been talking to david20 on msn and he said it would be a good idea and would solve my problem if i ran a monty stem and some riser bars, this should mean that the steerer should be the right length. So i will see which i cheaper, 2nd hand forks or the stem and bars and i will hopefully buy the cheapest. Thanks to everyone, Allen.Edit: its not what you said david that sounded dangerous its the guy above about the cutting to low on his steerer. bob87
If all else fails and you cant afford to get new forks any time soon.Speak to one of your local welder/fabricators.They should be able to weld a new piece to the top of the steerer so that they fit perfectly. Synergy
what frame is it your using? they were more than fine on his t-pro, maybe get a longer bolt or push the star fungle nut up more? speak to me on msn i dont know why its like that
blinky
you cant push a star nut up, thats the whole point of them. exactly how far is the top of the steerer tube away from the top of the stem? if its halfway between the bolts, just get a headlock, then just do the bottom bolt up really tight. it'll be fiiiine. Onzaallen
Hi, its is an onza t-pro frame the 04 one that i am using. I am puting all the parts back on as it was on the t-pro forks so i don't think i am doing anything wrong. The steerer has been cut at an angle.........do you know why that was if he was using the same stem as me? I can't see why you would cut it at an angle unless you were running a monty sloping stem.Ps. micheal, i though you were sending bolts with the disc, you said that you would.Cheers, Allen. planet x alan
you could maybe try a head lock/head doc as opposed to the star nut and top cap? that should make it a bit safer
