A New Chain

I'm pretty newbish when it comes to bike maintenance, and trials in general, but I've come to realize that it's time to replace my chain...I bought my bike second hand, and according to the owner, it's been on there for a good 9 months, including the time I've had it for. I'm getting into gaps, and I don't want to worsen the hack job that is my face at present.

Does anyone have recommended chains for a mod? I'm looking at a KMC 1/8'' 410Z-chain or somesuch right now, as it's cheap and in stock at my LBS, but any suggestions are welcome.

My major question is about installation. Is it done with just a personal chain tool? I would think doing that would weaken the chain a lot off the bat. Would a shop do a better job? And if I'm buying a chain like KMC, with some sort of missing link thing, is it a better idea to use that, or just toss it and link the chain as normal.

*Edit: Posted it when halfway done....
