Spank
heya, i managed to get hold of a bike, its a DDG Shooter (so dont all groan at once ) but i am having problems fitting the back wheel.now with my little experience i would like answers in a form i can understand cos i aint to bright on this subject yet . The problem is that the back wheel does not spin freely when i turn it by hand, it will take the chain and pedals with it, then when i hold the pedals to stop them moving the back wheel carries on moving, making the chain go slak and come off.i hope that made sense to you, but like i say, am new and would really appreciate someone helping me get out riding again
The lemonade man
It sounds like your chain is too tight, are you running an unsprung chain tensioner? Do the pedals move when you spin the wheel backwards?
Spank
yes...they do move when i spin them backwards....and the chain tensioner is a sprung one (assuming this means that it springs around to keep the chain tight)
Jez
Could be a duff freewheel that ain't disengaging properly? I take it it's a rear freewheel jobby rather than having it on t' front?
Egg Fried Rice
your hub could be really tight, those old hubs can be tightened/ loosened with spannahs and inside are the little bearings depending on what hub you got.JK
Concussion
My guess....... seeing as you have a `moderately priced bike` and you want to `get back` riding (been killing your shimano practising), I'm thinking you've knackerd your Shimano hub / freehub body, see here stoping it from coasting.Used to happen to me all the time.New cheap freehub body or new hub, Hope / King etc! I went for the Hope pro 2....its fab! but I did moan a lot before hand ;-(could be summit else though?
Spank
erm....it seems to have fixed itself, went for a ride on it this afternoon to see if there was anything else that needed doing. The small list is : fix gear changing, tighten saddle ( yes i have a saddle) and tighten and sort my back brakes out.
Concussion
H`mmmm Deffo sounds like you chipped your freehub teeth...and then worn them down a bit riding around, causing it to be ok for a while. Expect the same thing soon, if it's a Shimano hub?
Lawnmowerman
Sounds to me like you need to change your cogs and chain. Give em a good lube and see how it goes. Also check that the cassette lockring isn't rubbing on the inside of the frame or that it's too tight as that can also cause the freehub to lock up.
