Car Insurance

Just dont tell them that! Say that your mum or whoever will be driving it more (Y)

I had a friend at Uni, insurance in his Dad's name I think, and registered to his Dad's address in a much better part of the world than where he was actually living.

Made a claim, investigator came to his house at uni, and the investigator declared that he was the main driver, and his uni address was his main residence so his policy was invalid so no cash.

When I've been on my parents policy, it's been with Direct Line. Big benefit is I have no no claims as such, but I get a discount on my own policy as I've been a named driver with them for seven years without a claim. Hence quote for 1.8 Focus was £275...

There's no easy way to get insurance, it's almost luck depending on who has the best rates for your car/post code combo, and how many sales they need to rack up before the end of the week/month. One thing to keep in mind is that with insurance, it's not always the cost of the car they're considering, it's the cost of the potential claims if you lose it and drive into a bus queue... The truth is that young drivers make mistakes and therefore claims, and statistics show that they make more than other groups. I remember when I was 17/18 and there was a story of one girl at college who wrote off her car an hour after passing her test.

The main thing I'd say is try lots of different insurers for quotes, but listen out for 'Our policy is underwritten by...'. You may find that Tesco - for example - have their policies underwritten by Norwich Union. When I was getting travel insurance one time, they said this and then I got a cheaper quote from Norwich Union direct! Same cover, lower cost.

Probably the reason you can't drive back from your test if you pass, because they think you'll be cocky.

I used confused.com it came back with a few different cheap insurance quotes and the cheapest was with yes insurance. I went through my dad though, him the main driver and me a named driver. Whilst I was learning it only cost me £850 to learn in my car as a named driver and it went down to £600 when i passed. The only problem being a named driver is not all insurance companies let named drivers earn no claims, so when you get your own insurance later on it'll still be expensive for the first year.

My insurance for my van as a seventeen year old, first policy etc was around £350 third party..

I lose 20% for my no claims soon as well, then I can go fully comp for like an extra £25 or something stupid.

Go me, you should all come live in guernsey!!

Tis third party though.. fully comp is another story

I just said though, I can go fully comp after my first year for only like £25 or something. Fully comp wouldn't have been extortionate or anything.. I just couldn't afford it at the time.

Yea thats what this thread is pretty much getting at.. first year drivers not being able to get fully comp insurance when thats what people actually do need.

quick question to all you guys who have cars already and are insured:

if you have put things like a new headunit, speakers and stuff in (that cost a bomb) are they covered to a certain amount or do you have to get an extended insurance policy? just ive got myself a new setup arriivng soon and i want to make sure its all covered if some pikey wants to come along and pinch it.

same goes with alloys, i have been offered some standard alloys from the model up of my car, but im guessing thatll void my insurance if i dont declare them? or is it only if you have super duber nice ons you have to let them know?
