RatherGood
I recently bought an Echo Tough bar and an Onza PZ31 stem, I have only had them for a couple of weeks and about a week ago I started to hear a creaking coming from the stem. I'm not sure why, I have tried loosening (wasn't a good idea ) and tightening the handlebar clamp and the steering tube clamp but it still creaks when I put wight on the bars. Any of you know why this is? It's really getting on my nerves...EDIT: I have used the search by the way and all I found was handlebars slipping Edited July 14, 2006 by RatherGood
trial-biker-ryan
it could well be the headset, take your stem of the steerer tube on he forks and take the forks partly out and give the bearings in the headset a good grease ryan.. RatherGood
Yes I thought it might be the headset as well, forgot to mention it's a Diatech D-cup and is as new as the bars and stem. I will give it a good grease later when i get to my bike (I leave it at a friend's farm, some good riding spots there). I'm pretty sure the creaking is coming from the handlebars though
trial-biker-ryan
err cant think why on earth the creaking would be coming from the handle bars? the only thing i can think is to tighten the up real good.. im pritty sure its the headset though
Robwalker
Handle bars will just creak because of the flex and the pressure of the metals on the clamp. Try taking everything appart and greasing it up and then see if it makes much of a difference. This should stop things being in direct contact and hopefully stop the squeaking. $IL3NT.
have u tried spraying WD40 over all the joints. Thats what i do untill the noises stop
T-BAD
take the bolts out and grease em' up. then spray some wd40 on your bars and wipe em' down, this cleans all the dirt inbetween your bars and stem. Thats all i did with mine and they never creak now
basher
if you can hear and fell a creak from you hande bars that usually means they're ready to snap. i'd take your forks out give them a good check for any cracks, other wise just grease everything like everyone said. poopipe
creaking deng bars doesn't mean anything - my zoos have been doing it since they day I put them on, as do a lot of peoples. I think it's a combination of muck and the finish they put on them.

krissis
The last time i encounted this problem i found my steerer tube to be slightly oval there for only gripping two points of the steerer tube thus being able to move which makes a creaking noise. It can sometimes happen by over tightening bolts, remember typical m6 bolts are only ment to be tightened to 8-12 Nm.
lee220
Instead of greasing it up you could take the handlebars from the stem and put tape round where the clamp clamps. Edited July 14, 2006 by lee220
