Removing A Freewheel..

Recommended Posts

It's easiest if you've got a freewheel remover tool, and the remover tabs on your freewheel aren't ground off. I've found the easiest way to be:

Using a long bolt and a nut (and some spacers to hold it all in place), bolt the freewheel tool to the crank arm + freewheel. This just means you can put more force on without the tool jumping off easily. Don't do it up too tight though, just tight enough to hold it in place is good. Because you're gonig to be loosening the freewheel, the freewheel's going to move up, away from the crank when you loosen it, meaning you don't want it to be stopped by your nut + bolt.

Clamp your crank arm in a vice, so the extractor tool is on top.

Get an adjustable spanner, and then attach that to it. If you've got some kind of extension bar you can slip over the end of the spanner to get more leverage, that always helps. If you get a bar, just turn the freewheel off the crank arm. If you don't, you could just hit the spanner with a hammer. They screw off in a normal way, so it's anti-clockwise to remove it (Y) You basically turn the freewheel the same way that you spin the driveshell to make it click :)
