justfuzzit
Has anyone tried just not using a chain tensioner? On vertical droputs. Whose accually had the right length? I practically had it working on my specialized epic SS.k bye>edit<heres an example. Edited July 9, 2006 by justfuzzit
David
It may work for a bit, but after some hours/days riding the chain will stretch causing it to not be tensioned correctly and will fall off! Dave
JonCongreve
I've ran tensioner-less for a while now on my Echo Control, about 4 months. Works awesome The chain didn't/hasn't stretched that much either, so it is still a good tension
blinky
did it on my old bike, after a while the chain stretched a bit, not enough to skip though. you need to be careful if its too tight, might bugger up the hub a bit.
justfuzzit
Yeah, if your chain has stretched so much that it will skip or fall off, you need a new one. also check that the chain is tensioned correctly while rotating the cranks. Sometimes the rings will be slightly off.
bikerider
I tried this for a while whilst I was waiting for my tensioner to come. I used a really old chain so it didn't stretch anymore, but it kept making that 'boing' noise It was ok though, as long as pre-loaded the cranks before EVERY move. Couldn't get a comfortable gear either, 19 made chain too tight, and 18 too slack.
trials_pimp
Still its a pretty crap idea.Ok you save some money, but youll need to spend that on repairs. For one it will make your driveline wear out alot quicker. And if you land on your chain, hows it going to give?it wont and it will snap.Thats why im not a fan of all these new fixed tensioners, no give in the chain. And before you say " I never land on my chain" You will do someday, land orkward on a rail, pointed wall, anything like that.Ok its less likely on these new fangled Short rear end bikes, but im happy knowing I have the option to be able to land on the chain, and it not snapping something
