PaRtZ
Firstly I've used the search and found that firewire is slightly slower than USB 2.0, but are there any other advantages of using either/both?Secondly am I right in thinking this is ok? Thirdly if its not can someone suggest a better one, bare in mind im on a budget of about £80Basically I just want to use it for storage of archive footage/files/schoolwork/pron/videos etc.Chars! Haz
USB isnt really faster than Firewire, because its speed fluctuates from about 100kbs to 480kbs, tending towards the slower speeds, and Firewaire is pretty much a constant 400kbs. Having said that, USB 2 is fine, really.I've not used that particular drive, I went for a LaCie but I don't really think you can go wrong with most drives like that. Other Option is to buy a high quality HDD and spend ~£10 on an external case, which will wourk just thae same, and you can easily mount the drive inside a PC if you should so wish later on. Steve-A
LaCie is where its at for external drives. Firewire 400 is fast enough. It will play videos upto about 3mb/s easy. If you can afford it though get firewire 800 ( ieee 1394b) as this with haddle twise the data rate. If budget stretches then http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quick...0&InMerch=1 We've got a few of the 1Tb versions at work and they work well. Alexx
Important things in an external hard drive; Cash size (16mb is better), RPM and dual connections (firewire and usb so you can plug it into anything). Also the actual internal manufacturer of the drive (stay AWAY from western digital internals).Firewire IS faster on external hard drives, though USB 2.0 is faster on paper, the data transfer rate is bitty, and on BIG files is downright shoddy, firewire on the other hand is just constant, doesn't matter if your moving 1000 mp3s or a 1gb movie, almost every time firewire works faster on large transfers.I got a 350gb 7200rpm 16mb cash external drive with firewire and USB 2 with 3 year warrenty off ebay for £98 posted It's worth looking around
