Rear Brake On The Right ?

Concussion

Recommended Posts

Thinking of changing my brake levers so the rear is on the right! Seems the natural thing to do too me! :S

Short Version: My left index finger is a pile of crap, always has been ......its my left and I'm right handed ! Oh` and I had an accident as a kid, resulting in me losing all feeling in my left index finger for a few years ......90% ok now!

My dirt bike has one brake, its on the right (rear duh!) ....... it feels great, hated it on the left ..... to the point where when I jump on my trials bike I have to keep saying "its on the left - ON THE BLOODY LEFT" untill I get used to it again.

I'm thinking that should leave my left hand/fingers free to pull on the bars harder / straighter as I'm putting the power down with my left foot also? I hate putting the power down using three fingers to grip the bar!

All sound good from my point of view but NOBODY does it! Why is that ?

Some goody good decided that the front brake be on the right yes` .......to combine the most powerfull stopping brake with the `natural` right hand? That's right, RIGHT? Well that method don't do shit for trials IMO.

Maybe I should do this to all my bikes (four)?

OK, short version my arse, but its one of those finicky things!

HELP - would you / should you / am I a freak? ^_^

Cheers

normally i'd accuse you of being a filty frenchie for even thinking of such a thing but since you've got a medical reason i'd say give it a go.

I'd definitely advise doing it to all your bikes though. nothing worse than getting confused over brakes.

hey

well it may seem odd to people but i tried it and i can ride using both hands (either left or right hand on the lever, not both at the same time!)

dont worry about what other people do, its a personal preference to you, if you feel more confortable, then try it, i prefer my left, just from riding so long now, but then again i did break all the bones in my right hand so its not as strong, try it mate, see what you think.

I don't know how your problem with your hand affects the strength, but I think most people on here wouldn't feel a difference by swapping around (other than it'd be VERY confusing!). I think people think that their left hand is weaker than their right, when it's really not. It's just not as co-ordinated. But you hardly need any co-ordination to pull a brake lever anyway. Besides, most people on here will give their left finger a work-out every time they ride so that's gotta do something.

If you think it'll help then there's no harm in trying. Just don't expect miracles.

P.S. It'll make it really annoying when you come to ride other people's bikes ;)

....nice one _skj0lsvik_ and poopipe !

So I'm not a freak then? Thanks for the advice .....I'll give it a go, in fact I'll do it after this so the grips can reset overnight.

I'm running a maggie rear and a Avid cable front ........suppose I could just swap em` and run them upside down untill I can be arsed swapping maggie levers? Thats cool right?

If it works, all my bikes are getting the same treatment ....although riding other pep`s bikes will be weird. I'm an un-scocial bugger anyways ....I'm doing it! :P

Cheers

PS: If I do swap maggie levers, will that leave me with a front maggie with a left lever or could it be sold and used as a normal rear maggie (with short cable`)?

When I had my first hs33 I used it upside down, works brilliant! Infact, I used a el cheapo vee brake lever upside down too.. When I didn't really needed too :-

And yeah dawg, you sell it as a normal rear maggie.. haha

I would even risk saying that more people worldwide use their right hands with rear brakes (bicycles). Sooo, there is a british way and a "rest of world" way :P

So if you think your right index finger is more powerful, go and try it. You won't be disappointed (Y)
