sketchup is cool. my company were thinking or licensing the technology a year or so ago but gave up on account of the models being completely useless outside of sketchup.

that said, its sweet - really nice bit o software for the non professional 3d types out there. everyone should go play with it so my bosses can see what they missed out on.

google have been bloody quick on this as well, as far as i know the paperwork was only signed a couple of months ago ...

the models are not completely useless outside sketchup. if thats what you think then your company needs to re-think. you can export sketchup to all major programs - autocad, 3d viz, 3ds max etc etc and there are many plugins that allow further development. sketchup is the quickest, easiest way for a company to show conceptual ideas to a client within hours rather then weeks :).

i love sketchup and if im being honest its mint, with its component librarys and large following worldwide it will become an industry contender soon (Y)

just check what some people can / have done using sketchup - http://images.google.co.uk/images?svnum=10...amp;btnG=Search

We weren't intending on export to other packages, we were intending on integrating sketchup into our software so we needed decent quality output without any user intervention. Unfortunately sketchup proved to be too messy -which is a shit cos its a really nice package to work with.

What I should have said was the geometry output isn't clean enough for direct output to a realtime engine that uses vertex based lighting.

As far as i know google have been offering it free for several months now.

that'll teach me to listen to the lying marketing department.

You can only export the models to autocad if you buy the full version, however you can export them as jpeg or bitmap images and photoshop them i use it for my Grpaphics folio work all the time it's a great programme especially used in conjunction with photoshop.

i'll post some of my work later.
