Extreme_biker0
If you run pirated windows on your computer, consider setting up a dual boot to linux or some other o/s, as Microsoft are going to start blocking pirated copies sometime in autumn. They will give you 30 days warning, then your computer will not boot up.The little program that stops it booting up is called WGA, and you can stop it from installing on your computer by turning off windows updates however.Just thought i'd bring this up so nobody gets taken by surprise! (i know a lot of people loose their original disks and are forced to download a 'replacement' copy!) Extreme_biker0
You're a bit late mate, this has been going on for ages.Wrong, they announced it today. Although another version of WGA has been about for a while that did not stop your computer from booting but rather displayed a message. Extreme_biker0
Someone will figure out a way to remove WGA i reckon, it's only a matter of time with all the geeks in the world on it!But yeah, if it says it's fake now but doesn't do anything, you're in trouble. Turn automatic updates off. If you don't, when the WGA thing is updated, it will stop your computer from booting at microsofts will.It might be in 'windows components' (left hand side) on add/remove programs? I'm not sure, I haven't looked myself because fortunately i turned auto updates off a loong time ago, although I know somebody that does. RicH_87
you can already get rid of wga, click herehowever that is based on the original install, is the no boot thing real? and will it come into effect even if you 'remove' wga?

Spikenipple
You can get around WGA by unticking the box when Automatic Updates pops up, simple as.I still get other updates that Microsoft release that aren't WGA, but it's not really going to affect me when they stop releasing them to un-certified computers because you can just find the code of the patch and download it as a stand-alone file from websites found on Google, which is also how I got hold of SP2 and DirectX 9c. Barbra
my next door neighbor who's round here, who's rarther a computer geek, said that a few big companies in America are sueing them for it, for some reason i didn't really pay attention, i lose him in convorsations after a while but he says its a type of spyware. Its classed as an update but it doesn't do anything for the customer, just for microsoft.
Monkey
So download Knoppix and use a CD. Or any of the alternatives here:Frozen Tech's LiveCD listSome of the CDs have an install button which you can use to put the thing onto your hard drive, if you like it.Or Solaris, which I find less clunky than some of the linux varieties I have tried...Or something else I haven't thought of? Older stuff maybe. DOS, now there was an operating system.
