Front Discs

Looking for a new front brake since the o2 don't want to play with me anymore.

i've been looking at,

Hope Mono Trials, 160mm disc

Avid BB7 185mm disc ( i have an XT-lever already)

so that's the main choise, i'm a fairly big guy so i'd appreciate some power,

i've seen the Mono trial in 180 @ tartybikes, but it costs more than twice as much as the 185mm bb7

will the Mono Trial with a 160mm disc have enough power, or should i go for the bb7 with a linear housing and a XT lever? (have the lever and housing already)

cheers

If you allready have the housing and lever I think the best wallet friendly choice is the avid, allthough i'm not sure of their power as iv'e never tried one.

On the other hand the mono trial is expensive for a reason, it was purely made for trials. I tried a few mono trials (different sizes) and all of them have been super grippy with loads of power.

The only downside with the mono trial is that they have been known to break (no pun intended :P ) . No-one i know has broken one but theres quite a few people on here that have experienced difficulties with them. In conclusion if i had the money i'd definaltly get the mono trial (which i will be doing later on this year (Y) )

Definitely get a BB7, without a doubt it'll be as powerful, if not more powerful. You wont get any problems with the BB7 like you would with hope. I got to say a set up hope definitely doesn't feel as nice as the BB7 theres always the upside of being able to service the BB7 while your out riding too. only takes 5 mins max to set it up again whereas you get a hope you could spend a fair bit of time getting it to just work. And its cheaper!

Ive no experience with the bb7 but what i would say is that from riding dh, the hopes really suck, even the 6pot ones, i know loads of people who forked out for them and they just arent reliable at all, in france they were over heating and allsorts. The majority of people i ride dh with have switched to juicy7s, the avids seem to be miles ahead of hope fir modulation and power, they dont heat up as much either.

Ive gone well off hopes and will only run avids or hayes now....

cheers

I have an avid, 203mm and its PHAT!!! If you don't stop with one of these beasts you must be one fat mother :) Seriously go for an avid 185:

More than powerful enough

Easy to set up

Easy to adjust

Easy to repair

Plus if something breaks its likely you'd be able to replace it yourself as its all mechanical. I wouldn't even like to try to repair a hope.

When you order the Avid, make sure you order a front mount for IS forks aswell...

Cause i ordered the avid brake (185mm) and it came with a rear mount, and it doesnt fit properly, only half of the pad is hitting the rotor.. BUT i still havnt received my front mount from CRC and iv been riding with the avid as it is.. and f**k ME!!! it is VERY powerful for the amount of pad that is being used!

Defo get the 185mm avid or 203mm (probably 203mm (Y) )

Cheers, rob!

Ditto lil but your running one on a mod :ermm: my friend was doing that till i stole the brake off his :P

seriously i think the down side of the brake is possibly its power its just a bit snappy and easily knows how to point your face at the floor as it buckaroo's you over the bars if you get too rowdy with it

funniest thing watching someone who rides trials really slowly bump up a kerb and go right over the bars on my bike..... vair ammuse

seeing as though you already have the cables and levers, you would be a fool not to go for the avid, seriously, its the best thing i have bought in the past year for any bike i have, what a deal, 45 quid, nice and tidy 160mm rotor, no problems. and the simplicity helps soo much if your out on a ride and it all goes tits up, just tweak it with the speed dial and cables or what ever. and the power, it rapes all the hope brakes i have been on. judging on mates with hope, to keep them running you need to be a sad tool and tweak it every week and spend lots of care an attention on it (N) kiss my arse, avid take about 3 minutes to stick a new wd40'd up cable in (Y)

avid all the way

bb7 all the way they are amazing. it cost you nothing to buy a new cable every 6 months or so compared to a bleed. i love mine and would buy another with out hesitation. your payin more for a hope brake, that has more chance of braking and locks the same.theres so much more to go wrong on a hope and its not worth the hasle to be honest. if you are set on a hope brake though get a 180 hope mini there bout £100 and work amazingly they lock up really good, but still theres just to much hasle compared to a avid

Get the 185mm Avid, or even the 160mm, it doesnt matter about rotor size so much with this brake, its mint!

I have had my Avid for over a year now, with the SAME set of brake pads, the same cheapo cable and the same XTR lever and the performance has been constantly impressive. I weigh about 13 stone and it holds me with ease, everyone who has had a go on my Avid agrees that its an amazing brake. I have never serviced it, only the odd wd40 top up round the moving parts (dont get it on the rotor though) and one pad clean a month or so after I first got it, its basically maintenance free, unlike the hopes. You already have the cable and lever so go for the Avid.

To sum it up, the Avid is much cheaper, on par of not better than (it is in my opinion) power wise than the hope, more reliably, and in less need of maintenance. Its funny seeing my BMX mates too, who think that mechanical discs cant be good because their only experience of them is on those crappy budget mountain bikes, so they have a go and go flying over the bars! :P:D
