Brake Problems On My Car

Will Arnold

Recommended Posts

as some of you may be aware, i crashed my car a few weeks ago because the brakes failed.

when i say the brakes failed, i mean they went to the floor when breaking reasonably hard, which meant i carried on rolling(with the brake slightly slowing the car) and hit the car infront. after the accident, the brakes came back to normal after a few pumps of the pedal.

anybody know what could have caused this? i want some experienced views please.

thanks for your help!

Will

hey i am doin a mechanics course at college and i know a few things that could of caused this if you had new brake pads fitted they didnt pump your brakes before you left. or you had air in your brake fluid this can happen by pumpin the brake and then leavin it then when you go to use your brakes you wouldnt have any until you repumped the if you know what i am tyrin to say hope this helped.

Either air in the system or more likely you cooked them - should be able to smell it if you did cos they'll stink.

Were you using the brakes a lot before they failed to stop you?

When you realised they weren't doing a lot did you think to use the handbrake lightly? It's supposed to be there as a backup if your main brakes fail, although just yanking it on isn't a great idea!

What car/brakes is it? Are the discs vented?

What pad are you running?

It's probably worth looking into a branded brake pad (something like EBC Green's) if you're having problems with overheating.

Sounds like air. Under normal pressure, i doubt you'll notice it, but under extreme braking, you apply a lot more force which aggrevates the air and 'causes problems.

The only thing i can suggest is go somewhere quiet, private road or something, and test the brakes properly. Preferebly at the same speed you was doing when you crashed. Do it a few times and see what happens.

brakes were almost cold as we had just set off :(

obviously didn't think to use the handbrake :P i'd hit them before i could think to do anything else then push the brake pedal harder :(

cheers for your views people, i'm gunna get the brake fluid that in there tested for water - to see if it is water boiling and releasing gasses into the system. then i'll get it bled and hope for the best :S

oh and i gotta fit all the front slam panel n bumper n radiator and shit, fun fun fun :)

thanks you!

it wasnt going to be the brake pads anyways was it? as brake pad and backing doesn't compress making the pedal go to the floor :P

yer, re-bleed soon.

3 of the son of a bitches in the car i hit are claiming for whiplash injuries to the neck, upper back, lower back, left leg and one of them is claiming for knee whiplash and foota whiplash or some shit. utter c**ts if you ask me, how current thinking of sue sue sue and claim claim claim is taking over, makes me sick to be honest.

they also claim that they are off work because of all of this.

Will :(

f**k off! they would only really get them injurys if you hit them at like... 60mph, and they were at a standstill...

f**king tossers!

Like, We were driving on the motorway, and the car in front kept braking really hard and stuff for no real reason :S , and then she came to a hault, and my dad tryed to stop,m but went into the back of her, at like 10mph, all it done was band her tow bar... 3 years later (this month) shes claiming for whiplash, not being able to do washing, gardening, working, and making love :ermm:

Shes also claiming that shes got real bad bruising to lower belly area (JUST remembering that she had a bicectamy te week before the accident...) but reliant on saying its the accident... Her husband and 2 sons are 100% fine though...

Bitch...

Claiming for f**king £3000 aswell....
