Synergy
Sorry if im being stupid here, but if he tops the brake fluid up first (because its cheaper to do) if the light still comes on then he can start thinking about the replacement pads? Just do the fluid first and see if it solves it, its not going to destroy to car by topping it up.... lolor is it...........

trials_pimp
no nothing will happen. If he tops the fluid up and the light goes out, then its happy days.If he does it and it stays on, the porblem is elsewhere, but it would have nothing to do with the pads.Gillman, I understand what your saying, but you cant allways trust Mechanics. His pads could be fine, and the tech just wanted some bonus for replacing them. The best thing to do would be lift a wheel off and have a look how much pad material is left. And if you want to get really into it, measure the rotor thickness, and calculate by driving style and milage, how long the pads and discs will last.Worn out pads arent the end of the world, 90% of cars they are dead simple to change. I just didn't want to see someone have to spend more money, or think that topping off fluids was the answer all the time.Yes topping off will turn off the brake light, unless you have been riding around with the emergenccy brake on. Their is a sensor in the resivor bottle that indicates when the brake fluid is low, when this happens it triggers the brake light to turn on, for all that wern't sure why the light is on. Those are the only two reasons the light will come on, low fluid or e-brake is on.Sounds like we have talked this topic to death and all is understood with everyone, am I worng?Matt.
