Wireless Problem Mkiii. Sorry...

Sorry about this guys, I'm once again having problems with our wireless network.

First we had a telephone cable going from the wall plug, to the router that was plugged into the PC with a LAN cable.

It is currently still set up like that untill the problem can be sorted.

We got fed up of having the cable across the floor, so I plugged the router into the wall, and had the wireless USB thing in the PC.

I have installed it, configured the router and everything.

But when it trys to get a signal, I'm left with this for ages:

IPB Image

It says it has 90% signal.

In the tray thing at the bottom, it says nothing's working. As you can see.

It scans the channels for ages, but cannot get a signal.

Here's the Settings tab, if it helps:

Here are my Netowrk Connections:

IPB Image

As you can see, 'Local Area Connection' says "A netowrk cable is unplugged" and 'Wireless Network Connection 3' is not connected.

I don't understand it.

It all works fine when connected via Ethernet cable, but I don't want it that way.

I might even have to ring AOL for help. :o

Help me. :(

Not 100% sure what you mean...

But it doesn't ever get a signal.

I was sat there for ages waiting for it. :S

And how do I let windows sort it. :turned:

(I know i'm useless :P )

Not sure if you've tried this- But right click on the icon where it says that the network cable is unpluged and click Bridge Connection.

Or, do what Jon said and uninstall the wireless stuff and let Windows sort it, I did that and my connection was a lot better than it had been before.

Ok.

I re-installed the driver and utility, then I removed the untility from Add/remove..... as Jon said.

I then un plugged, and plugged in the wireless adaptor, and it didn't say anything about finding a netowork.

I tried to let windows repair the connection, but it cannot connect.

I just told me to contact who manages the network. :S

One thing to check, and I've just noticed this on the pics above, is that the firewall is aware of the local connections, and will allow traffic to pass. Assuming all the IP addresses are correct (make sure the wi-fi one is different to the ethernet one) then I would guess firewall.

There's usually an option to set up a safe zone or home network and you just give an address range and hey presto!

Tried that. No Wireless networks were found:

Tried to set one up, but got this:

EDIT: Just tried the troubleshooting from Microsoft.com, and searched '871122' and did exactly as it said, and i'm still getting the error box.

Have you tried allowing the compputer access to the network wirelessly... or even had a look through these settings?

Type in http://192.168.01 and if the pc can connect to this its not a signal problem between the pc and the router. I'm pretty sure with my wireless kit, coincidentally the same set your using, i had to connect my desktop using the cable then when i wanted the laptop on i had to make it try to find the network and it appeared in the list of available devices, then i had to put it in the allow access list.

Or you could just try changing the channel in the same set of settings.

You will definately need the netgear wireless configuration utility software as it makes it a heap loads easier. Also noticed in your original picture of the netgear config utlilty you had it looking for a network called wireless... set it to "any (first available network)"

If this doesn't seem to help add me to msn so i can send you print screens of what i mean ;)

EDIT: You can also try going to the network connections window and right clicking on your wireless connection, click properties, click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option in that little list, then click properties... make sure the "obtain ip adresses automatically" tickbox IS checked.

Also on a sidenote the choose wireless connection thing built into windows that you are trying to use in the post above doesn't register any networks on mine either (and i'm using my wireless laptop to write this now ;))so i'm guessing its just something to do with the netgear set ups.

In the first picture, why is the mode set as access point? That could be your problem.

Its meant to be, mine is too. I think its the router not the laptop hence it being the access point... i dunno though, i might be talking rubbish :$ Works like that for me though.

Nope, the wg111 is a usb wifi reciever. Hence him having it in access point mode is wrong. Basically what he's doing is sharing his current LAN connection (which is already plugged in via ethernet cables) over wireless.

I think. I haven't had to work with wireless under Windows, though, so I might be wrong too.

Bump.

Just re installed windows.

The whole PC is running smoothly, apart from the network.

It now detects the netowork, but cannot connect via the USB Wireless Adaptor.

I'm sure everything is set up as it should be.

Anyone else wanna try and help?

Might have to resort to ringing AOL again...

Youre wrong. Out of a choice of ad hoc, which is a computer to computer network, or the choice of using a router based network, you choose your router one ever time, right. Its telling the card to connect to an access point, not be one, dont get confused.

It sounds like you just need to log in to your router (funnily enough, instruction in your manual telling you how to do that) and then enable wireless on your router... that should bring it up. If not - phone up your tech support number that again will be in your manuals. This is what they are there for.
