JohnBanks
Hello mate.Tar is good but you should really consider getting a rim grind because tar melts in the heat an slips a considerable amount, plus you have to keep on re-applying it chars john
g4ngst4_s4m
really iv heard tht if u spin on a disk brake it helps i have on my onza t-master but i have not used it yet because i need a bottom bracket
_Owen.
i have just put tar onto my rim and i was surprised at how well it works. at first it stuicks too much and your pads get stuck but thats only for about 2minets, but after your brakes are sooo good. JT!
If you put a sinsible amount on it works really well. Just don't go colouring in your rims like you a 4 year old with a wax crayon.Spitting on your disc, big no no. You'll get it contaminated, a disc should really be powerful enough as it is, chucking water on it generaly sorts out any power issuses, but it shouldn't be done every day, should only be done once when you first get it. baladi
tar works with a medium grind too. quite well actualy.i recomend tar if it's a problem for you to buy new brake pads every 2 months.... and if you 're using tryall rim, wich dont hold grind really well... sunn_bmixx
If you try the monty spray make sure you use the smallest amount with the wheel spinning because it is very sticky!! But I recomend it strongly as it is very good but needs to be aplied quite often as it doesn't have a very good grip life.thank youIan Bloomfield
Si-man
Tar is a good option if you arent comfortable with grinding your rims, just make sure your pads arent on set-up on the rim when you put it on, otherwise you ain't going anywhere!! Danny Foster
The only time i used tar is when my rim is on its last legs, 'strength-wise', after its had lots of grinds. Or if i've been to a very dusty riding spot (usually rocks/natural), as i don't usually carry angle grinders in my pocket .Danny.
simple_simon
tar does work iv bin usin it since i started riding the only problem is that the brakes can be too good lol i gave ma m8 sum tar and he flew over the handle bars

Rebelistic
I've only tried tar once but IMO it does give a stronger grip at the expense of modulation. If I was going to use it I would probably only use it on the rear wheel, as the rear wheel is required to lock reliably and not slip. If you want to do stoppies then I imagine tar on the front wheel would make it harder due to the wheel locking.Likewise if you have tar on the rear I imagine manuals would be harder to do as modulating the break would be harder. Like I say I've only tried tar once so I could be wrong.
Token
I think the common misconception with tar is that people coat their rims in it and then the pads stick and they cry. I put a really fine line of it round both sides of the rim an then the tar just smears out how i like it. imo i think it gives same amount of braking power as my mates plaz's on his grind, havnt had any slips yet so.... just dont ride in the rain
blinky
Ive ridden both a mod and a stock with tar on the front (both unground) and imo it gives the feel more like a good hydraulic disc brake e.g the hope moni mini trial. Comparing the price of a good v-brake (deores are good enough - £10) with the mini, its quite clear that a little tar can make a big difference, not only in performance, but also in cost too
