bikerbob
Hi Folks,A couple of questions from abit of a newbie here.I have been riding trials for a little while and I'm no good at it, but totally addicted. I have outgrown my megamo and am going to upgrade to something which is abit longer and has a reasonable spec. I am thinking about getting an 05 onza T-pro, I can't find anything else that is better value for money and it looks cool too.Anyway my questions are.Firstly when I order the bike would it be worth having the wheels tweaked and trued so as to give them a longer life, or is this better done later once the wheel has bedded in? Or even both?I have read that the bike shop can bed them in somehow.Secondly i know from mates that using rim tar and the right type of pads with HS33's makes a big difference, but i have also heard that rim grinds are better. So do you think i shoud have the rims ground, use tar or buy better pads or a combination.I'd be grateful if you could give your opinions. Thanks,Bob
Mark W
I prefer running a grind to tar, personally. A grind gives you way better performance in the wet, and better modulation 'cos it's more abrasive as opposed to being sticky. With regards the wheels, just ride them in a bit first. They'll bed in naturally and then if they start to go out of true you can get them sorted.
_Owen.
i rekon let your rim bed in 1st then when it is getting a bit worst for wear get it trued. i also rekon that getting pads that are made for ground or tar rims so that they work the best. owen
JohnBanks
Hi matewell most of the people i ride with use plazmatics on grined and it is a very good combo.so personaly i think you shuld get that. Also in this hot weather tar melts but grind stays true and grips much better chears John. Bigman
Is it a full build bike you will be buying, if so the T-pro is a very good bike to go for, some things like the forks, bars and stem are a tad on the heavy side and it would be best to upgrade them but they will be fine untill you feel you want to try something else. Which megamo do you have, and what build is it, if you post up a spec of current bike it could be that just upgrading the frame would be fine. The wheels tat come on a bike should already be pre-stressed, this is usualy done during the building process so there should be no need to do anything to the wheels if you buy a new bike.A grind on the rear rim is the best way to get the most power from your brakes, same as getting pads suitable, for a start i would get something like plaz CRM's and run them on a smooth rim as they will work sufficiently well on a smooth rim and you will not have to worry about griding your rim for a while, or until you feel you would like a more substantial rear brake Adam
bikerbob
Wow!That was amazingly quick! - don't any of you work, im off school for exams which finished on Friday, so im allowed to do nowt. Thanks for your replies, I think i might go for a rim grind from new since there are nearly no trials shops in my area, and i'm not the best with an angle grinder.Perhaps i should get just the rear rim ground, and have the spokes checked on that whilst they have the tyre and wheel off, it only costs around a fiver from 'tarty bikes' where i was looking compared to 25 quid in my local rip off shop. But new pads are a difinite must then, and what about brake boosters, do they just re-enforce the frame/forks to prevent flex and protect the hoses?Bigman, i would upgrade but my megamo really has the most basic of basic setups, and it's about five years old, i could easily spend masses of money on it, i might keep it for spares though, there are a couple of nice bits on it .What do you have to do with Graffics? I sorta know Andy who owns it/used to own it, i know he was on about selling it.Thanks alot!Bob
