balfa
Search has turned up nothing of any use. Does anyone know how to remove headset cups without damaging either the frame or the cups? Thanks
sir trial a lot
Buy a headset removal tool. Here is one. Expensive but well worth it
Jason
Ram a screw-driver in there and tap it out with a hammer (at your own risk ) Edited June 7, 2006 by Jason
mat hudson
get a screwdriver or old bmx stylee seatpost and stick it down the headtube so it rests agains the headset cups lip then whacked with a hammer a few times.
matt!
rest a screw driver on top of one cup and gently hit it with a hammer, same with the other cup, work fine with me.
the judge
Could you not make one of those tools out of an old seatpost? i.e. cut two slots down it so that the end is split into 4 pieces and then splay them slightly. It might work
Concussion
Personally, for a job like that I'd get my LBS to do it. Never trusted the `smack it` option ...although if your carefull it should be ok.
basher
i would surgest the best tool for the job would be an angle grinder, just wear some safty glass and have fun . nah im jokein just use a screw driver and hammer like people have suggested, just make sure you go slowly and things should be fine. Egg Fried Rice
just get it done at your local bike shop.
Robwalker
Well i used a masionary chisle, there like chisle's but thicker, and dont have a handle and are made fully from steel. They have a quiet large with so you can get it on a decent part of the cup and just tap it slowly. Also i find it helps if you pad the head tube either side and wack it in a vice to hold it still. Guest
Again with trials forum advising people who obviously know f**k all to use the butcher's method to get thing's done. Those of you who are talking about banging with a screwdriver and such, (i would hope) have some mechanical experiance, and so know when to stop, and where to hit to make thing's move in the way you want to.Unless you know what your doing, bring it to your local bike shop, andlet them use the right tools. If you do know what your doing, you should be able to make a removal tool yourself as someone said above, all it takes is a piece of metal tubing, a few slot's cut down the sidesand then a little pressure to bend the arms out ever so slightly. If you don't mind potentilally ruining your frame, whack it, otherwise, be sensible about it. Poor tools/mechanic equals poor results. I would buy the tool personally because I wouldn't want to make that sort of thing. Not too expensive for a Cyclus cup remover from Wiggle and if you're doing this once you might want to do it again... just better to have the tool I think.Same with a headset press. Most are willing to spend approx. £100 on a Chris King headset but won't buy a press. So they run the risk of buggering the frame/cups because they're too cheap to buy the proper tool. chris mac
well i would suggest a proper tool but i normally use a beefy screw driver and a hammer, does damage cups a bit but doesnt affect the strength at all. when putting a headset in use a bit of wood to cover the cup because i have made the mistake of hitting the bearings and killing them and stuff good luck mate Edited June 7, 2006 by chris mac
Ben Geary
Flat headed screw driver and a hammer has allways worked for me, i'm sure it'll work for you.Just be carefull though.
Si-man
Just hit it with a screwdriver in opposite places so as not to flare the headtube (much anyway)
Guest
but i normally use a beefy screw driver and a hammer, does damage cups a bit but doesnt affect the strength at all. If you hit it and mark it, your affecting the strength, maybe not much, but you are. The advice going about here is terrible.

balfa
Cheers for the help. Was hoping there was a better bodged method than screwdriver and hammer. Guess i'll probably take it to the LBS afterall.
justfuzzit
The first response was the best one. HEADSET REMOVAL TOOL ONLY. You can damage the insde of your headtube if you use anything else. Buy a headset removal tool or go to your local bike shop and get it done.
Max Quinn
IF you do decide to do it the whack it out method.... try not to do it with a screwdriver but with something that will apply the force to the whole cup at the same time like a socket that just fits down the headtube. Will make life easier and less risky .As already said though make the effort to get the proper tool if you can.
monty221pr
if u are going to put tubing down your headtube to smack out the cups does that mean you will also have to hit the starnut all the way out + can the star nut be used again or is a replacement in order
