D4T
Hi all,I used to ride a long time ago now and want to get back into it, i just dug my old bike out the shed this weekend and gave it a ride but it feels nothing like how i want it too.I have an old Cannondale Martyn Ashton replica (same geometry as the even older beast of the east i believe) with D521's and hope discs etc. etc. it was good at the time but doesnt ride how i would like it too and it feels very heavy compared to modern bikes. My question is should i keep all the bits of my last bike and swap the frame for something? if so what? or should i sell it on fleabay and buy something complete and ready to go? I used to love the feel of my mates 26" wheel megamo if thats anything to go by but im completely confused to whats a good trials bike/frame nowadays.....Any advice appreciated! Ewannnn
Well i take it that you would like to stick with 26" then.Quite a bit has changed since back in the old daysI would say just to upgrade your bike that you have now by buying maguas, new frame, forks, cranks and maybe rims depending on what you have already.A good frame to get would be the Echo Pure if you are short for money. My brother has got it and it is very light, strong and looks awesome. At a cheap price aswell. In my experience i have found that echo have been very reliable frames so you cant go wrong with one.If you dont have the money for that i would suggest getting a magura for your back brake, grind your rim and get some pads like Coust-sinks or Koxx bloxx brownsHope i helpedEwan Edited June 5, 2006 by Ewannnn
Endohopper
Oh God , I used to adore Cannondale's Ashton / Beast of the East frame . It's down to personal prefference whether to simply upgrade components or go with an entirely new frame , either way , I'd suggest trying other people's bikes to get a feel of how differing setups feel and ride . Whichever you decide , there's some bargains to be found on our beloved community's very own For sale / wanted section . Choose well , and welcome back . D4T
Hmmm... well i currently have hope discs, middleburn cranks, azonic bars, cannondale fatty forks etc. etc. so not really too bothered about changing that stuff unless i have too. I dont mind swapping my discs in for a set of magura rim brakes again, i used to run them before the discs without any problems. How much is this echo frame you speak of them? adamtrials
Disks or maggys are up to you, both have their pros and cons.
Joe_Elding
I'd change frames to something a bit more modern, Maybe a Planet X or something, not totally new-breed but not Cannondal either. And probably a new rear rim aswell, as mavics are often too thin for modern-day frames.
Ash-Kennard
rightkeep the burns, keep the bars, keep the forks, get either an echo pure or an echo control. (both excellent)get a rear magura, the frames dont have disc mountsyou will have to get a new rear rim because it is too thin for the frames and you cant set the brake up,Im sure you can use pretty much everything else from your old bike. maybe new stem, longer.everything is availiable from tartybikes.co.uk

Ali C
gahhhhhh I say this farrr too much!!!!!! but I reccomend an Ashton Justice.keep your parts and just get that frame, the difference will be incredible! the justice is very easy to get used to and rides amazingly well!please dont get a mod, the good thing about old skoolers is most of them ride stock and swear by them
Tony Harrison
Ali C is right - get the new Ashton, and most of your old parts will suit it fine, other than the rear disk that will need replacing with a Magura HS33. Fatty's are still excellent forks, D521's are another timeless classic! You'll find the Ashton much easier to ride - unlike the signature, the geometry on the Cannondale is hardly trials specific!! Gilman
Man, I remember those bikes, I used to want one for so long. I ended up with a monty mod bike back in the day. I had one of those old cromoly frame, triple crown fork, bmx style bars. Anyways its good to see some old skool riders getting back into the sport, I used to ride back in the mid 90's, then I got out of it and started just riding cross country. I just got back into trials about 3 or so years ago.Well anywayys if you are used to that old style frame, I would suggest a frame like a planet x or like everyone else is saying the echo pure. Alot of these bikes now a days have high bottom brackets, they're a litttle harder to get used too. I eventually switched to a higher bb frame after sometime. I am riding a BT 6.0 a md I would not trade it for anything. You should definatly keep that old bike as is, it's a classic.

The new ashtons are great btw!
D4T
Yeah it is deffo a classic, i think i will keep it as is I wouldn't sell it anyhow unless someone made me silly offer, i have far to many memorys of the good old days on it! Glad you all liked it, must of been about the mid 90's i was riding that beast, it was brand new at the time I think im gonna try and get an Echo pure as i really like how they look etc. is there much difference in the 2005 to 2006 frames? cos they look like the geometry is the same?
