People's Taste In Music

Reading through all these topics about different dress senses etc, I was wondering what it is that makes us listen to certain types of music, and say stuff like "I can't stand that type of music".

It can't be genetic at all as we aren't born with the knowledge that music exists I don't think.

Is it anything to do with what the person was doing the first time they heard that kind of music, and if they were doing something good that they enjoy, they will associate that kind of music with something positive.

There's probably a degree you can do on this topic, just wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

Cheers

To a degree, but not ALL music. I (and everybody) likes some shit/nostalga music, but thats mainly to do with memories to do with a song rather than the actually song.

But I have no idea why some music sounds better to my ears than someone elses. :S yeah some music you can relate to, through the lyrics. But what about those songs that just sound good ....

oh and what about this! I hate Cradle Of Flith, can't stand the music and especially dani fliths vocals and lyrics. They are shit! But I love 'The twisted nails of faith' by them, its a awesome songs. It weird...

You can probably observe the changes if you find a track which you absolutely love, and listen to it over and over again for a few days. In the end you'll hate it. First note what you love about the song, then when you hate it, note what you hate about it. Might be interesting.

Theres not much i dont like, just real hardcore stuff, some trance, and coldplay and other depressing songs.

do like a lot of random stuff though.

the stone roses (Y)

wu tang and oasis my taste have definitely changed though.

just depends how you were brought up and who you hung round with etc . .

everything for a reason though maybe you just like the music you do because thats how you were made :S:-

All depends on my mood, i have a very random collection of music lol

i agree to moods, when i listen to death metal (i do alot) it gets me aggressive and want to fight so i listen to it more to fuel my aggression..

but anyother time i listen to semi heavy, and i'm all good and acting normally

My mate Ed is exactly the same. He's on anti-psychotics.

I agree with moods for which sort of tempo and theme you try to find. But I think the genre's you like are chosen for you.

For instance, I had a certain lifestyle which made me listen to decent, heavy guitar-driven music with lyrics, preferably ones I could relate to. Whereas some people had a lifestyle which lead them to listen to music like D'n'B.

I used to listen to D'n'B and crap like that. Then my life changed and I hunted out music which I could relate to - so I knew I weren't the only kid going through what I was going through. I had no real interest in listening to disposable club tracks.

So I would say the route you walk in life chooses which genres you like. But your mood decides which bands' album you want to hear.

I find the opposite. If i'm angry or annoyed i find that proper heavy metal calms me down.

But i don't think it has anything to do with moods. Well it might for most people, but the i only really listen to metal(including emo and tother things like that) and indie. Can't stand anything else no matter what mood i'm in. Unless i was drugged up. :shifty:

Also i find that if you keep on listening to a genre of music you start to like it.

I try to avoid topics involving the brain though. Way too complex an organ.

My taste in music I feel reflects on my person.

Music.

hardcore - Bleeding Through, November Coming Fire, Throwdown. ect

The lyrics allways mean something that I can relate to. And you can resist a good beatdown

J Rock - Mad Capsule Markets, High And Mighty Colour ect

So differnt, and works soo well. Japan have it down to an art

Metal - Spineshank, Machinehead ect

Nothing like a good old skool mosh

Punk/metal - Yellowcard, Story of the year, refused. ect

Just amazing to listen to and rock

Mellow - Tool, Postal service ect

Nice to relax to ect.

i dont tend to like music or bands but generally songs. if someone puts out a good song then i mite like it but it doesnt mean i want to buy the album!! if some one manages to put a fews songs that hit the right note then yeah i mite buy it, but it doesnt mean i'll buy the next one!!

me i listen to any one from lagwagon to jack johnson to avengesevenfold to dj shadow to roots manuva to lostprophets and incubus. it doesnt matter if its 40 30 20 1 years old if it s good its good

Its mored based on the people and the area you grow up with, it de-ter-mins what kind of music you like. And music mainly de-ter-mins on how people dress and what they do. But not all people, like myself i like anything that sounds good.

At the minute, im a real fan the indie stuff,

Liking :

The Hives

The Futureheads

The Young Knives

The Rakes

Muse

Franz Ferdinand

Other artists similar to that and I'll listen to it to be honest, it's just easy listening when your browsing the net or walking round town or whatever :) But I'll still listen to the heavier stuff, like In flames, Killswitch and A Perfect Circle, Also like abit of Hip Hop, Like Phi Life Cypher, Atmosphere and Styles of Beyond, Just for when normal gets boring :).

All seem to just chill me out abit when I have had a rough day or frustrating shift at work.
