T.McMillan
I was just riding along as you do. and I was just lineing up to do a drop only about 3ft off of a cable drum onto a slopped pallet and roll off, easy as walking basically. Anyway did a few pedal hops to the edge of the cable drum lineing myself up and did a hard pedal hop to get myself onto the slopped pallet, and........BANG! I was like what the hell happened there, launching my self slightly over the handle bars and before i knew it I was impacting the tarmac drive outside my house, OUCH! Managing to cut my hand leg and armpit (dont know how i managed the armpit really hurts though lol)This was the first occuranse of this happening to me. oh yes you've guessed it, my chain snapped. I looked at my chain rolling it off the casette and it was the bloody gold magic link that sram supply you with the chain. The chain I use is a Sram PC59Everybody probably knows this problem already but i thought just to warn you guys out there dont use the gold magic link they supply with the chain. I am just going to join my chain with a REAL link so it shouldnt break again. MAGIC MY ARSEDoes anybody know of a good chain for a 9speed casette? Here are a couple of pictures of the bloody "gold magic link" not so magic in my opinion now Cheers for lookingTom
trialsalot
hey,i've never snapped a 9 speed sram chain,i think they're quite good.you should never join a chain with the split links.i'd get another sram one but join it without the split link using a decent chain tool like the park mini brute, they're really good.alternatively go for a thicker chain like the kmc's and run less gears.hope it helps a littlecraig
mat hudson
never ever use those chains. with or without the split link. kool chain all the way.

PaRtZ
Whats the business with the gold magic links then? They just the name sram uses for split links?
Christophe'
they are called magic links because of the ease of use for more normal riding. like road and xc.u can split the chain whenever and clean it properly. but they are week and not suited to trials

Christophe'
Its all about the riding im afraid.smoooooooooth.The chain isnt at fault.
nmt_oli
I personally always use the provided split link. the SRAM ones are possibly the weakest design, but there still pretty strong and ive never broken one. While it is possibly the weakest link in the chain, it is likely to be stronger than joining the chain yourself. If your doing this repeatedly, then its a justified opinion- but just one breakage could be unfortunate. could have been defective from the factory ect. Dan Jones
Its all about the riding im afraid.smoooooooooth.The chain isnt at fault. If your doing "power moves" I don't think you can say it's because your not smooth...

T.McMillan
The chain has lasted for ages at least a year i just think the magic link was in the place where it gets the most amount of pressure applied, which should be just before the chain ring. I wasn't using a huge amount of force, it was literally rolling off the cable drum onto the slopped pallet, I am also a smooth rider. Does a thin kmc kool chain work on a 9spd or is it deffinalty just an 8spd?Tom

Greetings
says it allPersonally I'd never use a link like that in trials, I do however use that chain (and link) in my street bike. The BMX ones are much better as they're no weaker than the normal links however they do like to unlock
chrishayton
just cause it looks big , doesnt mean its stronger. Its all about the riding im afraid.smoooooooooth.The chain isnt at fault.how smooth a rider you are doesnt determin when a chain snaps. think about it, your chain isnt affected by how hard you land. just how hard you kick. and just because you use a lot of power at the pedals doesnt mean you cant land smooth. and about the other comment. size of links has quite an important factor in strength of chain. Kmc chains are very strong
