Attitudes

Hi guys and girls.

You may remember me making a topic a little while ago regarding the attitude of some people on this forum (No names mentioned) .

I feel I should bring this up again, because quite frankly, some attitudes on this forum suck . Upon reasoning with myself whether to create a topic on this subject, I was browsing through trials chat , and I saw a relatively simple question that a lad had posted and wanted answered, he was bombarded by a load of sarcastic comments...

Is this really the way we should conduct ourselves when a fellow member of this forum asks for help? I think we ought to consider our comments and answers to questions more carefully , particuarly in NMC . Some 'newbies' do require genuine help and assistance from time to time, who cares if their spelling and grammar is a tiny bit off ? It is always the same from a certain few , "stop posting shit" etc, etc.

I am not trying to be a mod or a senior, this is merely something I have seen , and I would like to see some attitudes rectified :)

Thankyou!

Dean

I do agree, although I think the bigger problem is in NMC. I'll admit I am a hypocrite and I do take the piss out of some questions, but only if its a stupid or pointless one.

From my experience on the form no one has 'had a go' at me or anything like that. I admit I make some rubbish posts, but thats because its a forum, you need to have a laugh as such on it, a serious forum is a boring forum.

So taking the piss out of someone from time to time is ok in my books, obviously, depending who it is and if I know they won't take it seriously and (hopefully) take the piss back at me. I try to help out with bike questions whenever one pops up, so I can help occasionally :)

New Members Chat has a problem with validated (and occasionally unvalidated) members posting up the rules in a thread. This is just annoying, you need to tell them WHAT it is they've done and WHY its not a loud...scripting off rules never works for anyone, except the members trying to brown nose.

I think the attutide on forums is put down to experience on the internet, as stupid as that sounds, but say for example 80% of New Members use the internet for MSN, and thats about all, so they're not used to typing text in a normal fashion, instead its text talk...which annoys us, but they don't see anything wrong in it.

I've been a member on a billion different forums, I used to run one and moderate on a few others, so for me it comes easy to interpt between a serious and stupid post, and between a good member and a bad one.

I know that some people do ask serious questions and people just take the piss, but...what can you do? lol. To be honest, all it takes is one person to start it and the rest follow until the topic is closed. I think what the problem is on the forum is bad guidance.

Although Deanie, you can't say that you've NEVER took the piss out of anyone on this forum, I'm not having a go at you saying that, but I guess what I'm trying to say is its something that you'll never get rid of. If they banned people for it they'd be no one left on the forum...if you can't beat them, join them.

verdict? Bring back Adam Read.

also whilst i'm thinking about it, there may well be a few members who can be a bit twattish, there are still some decent helpful users

for example:

pretty much all of the senior members (notably rob janson)

rob p

jay

siders

smo

snappel

leedstrials

derf

trials_pimp

mat hudson

etc... etc..

so its not gone totally down the pan (yet)

Deanie, Heh :P:)

Agreed.

I will admit openly now , Matt , with you as my witness , that I have (never more than once or twice) taken the piss out of someone on this forum , but if you were to take a look at my good posts to taking the piss posts ratio , you'd see that I help more than I annoy .

My point is , there are people on this forum, who in fairness are dickheads, and (in my eyes) seem to be here just to annoy people , again this is most seen in NMC .

I just think we should take a good look at ourselves , and ponder what good we are really doing by being idiots to people who just need a hand ? :)

Oh yeah, I'm not insinuating that there aren't decent users who are helpful and informative , I just think we should look for those who could do with a talking to , and need to wise up a little :)

There is no excuse for pathetic spelling/grammar, text talk and lack of common sense. These issues should be highlighted for the NM's, as their schools obviously fail to do so.

Yes Ian , But we are united by our 2 wheels, not our spelling skills .

I just think we are very tight on spelling\grammar , I know that it is annoying to see text talk in a post, but if we can understand it just a little, and help , isn't that person going to benefit from us helping him\her ? :)

Heh, thanks. :P

I know I can be a twat sometimes but I just get wound up easily. Although I try and help as much as I can I get a little carried away sometimes. :$

I see your point there. Sometimes I get wound up by the stupidest of stupid questions, like 'which way do I turn the spanner?'. But then I forget that I was lucky in that I was shown things like that as a kid.

Yeah , I think if we just try and help, rather than kick up a fuss about one spelling mistake or a question that seems really simple (even stupid) then we might just all have less cause for argument. :)

the report button is pretty nifty way of not kicking up a fuss, which is good, remember that epic rant someone went on at chris ratcliffe a few weeks ago?

he was only trying to help

makes sense, maybe more warnings need to be dished out?

if in doubt PM the shit out of Mark*

*do not actually PM the shit out of mark, he's bigger than me and knows where i live

Yeah, I'm sure Mark wouldn't appreciate that :)

But I think the 'warnings' comment needs to be taken note of, I really think that the warning scheme isn't that effective in the sense that people are very lenient here , I'm not saying we all can't have a laugh, but when it comes to humiliating and taking the piss out of people, I think we should draw the line there.

Haven't really got much to say as Anzo has already done it. Nevertheless I can just point out that it gets much worse and what you are observing on this forum is really nothing comparing to what happens on the forum I moderate. This might be to do with people being more immature (not in the sense of age but behaviour), and the fact the forum is maybe 3x bigger than T-F.

What struck me when I first joined this forum was that people were very kind and keen to help - something I had never met before on the other forum - and didn't make fun of each other. Personally, I haven't taken the piss out of anybody as far as I can remember, maybe because I'm more of a guest here living outside the UK.

Maybe my viewpoint is such because I have to deal with the worst. If you come back from a war, you won't react to chavs beating somebody up. It's ok imho.

i agree but it depends where you place the line between having a laugh and being offensive....

people should however take the forum with a pinch of salt.

edit: next time you think this forum is starting to suck, hop over to OTN and be happy we have a lack of disturbing pornography

Indeed I remember, but even with a report button, some people STILL feel the need to try and make a fuss, it sucks really.

Anzo : I think I have you on msn ? :S and don't know how :Slol

I think the annoying thing for me is that I'm pathetic and I don't really have a life. I spend a lot of time on this forum, a good 8 or 9 hours a day, so when I have read everything and theres a new topic, I click it and read 'Whats your biggest sidehop?' its just irritating.

Or replies like 'Nice bike mate (Y)' to every single topic. I don't believe text talk should be tolerated, if you give a little, they take a lot. People will just take the piss with it, if they aren't prepared to put the minimal effort into a post, they don't deserve an answer.

And lets not forget, if you highlight the text talk problem with someone, its because they're 'dyslexic'...

Alex , You aren't a guest here (Y):)

I suppose it is a case of how far (Personally) you allow things to go. :)

to lazy to read everything, but yeah i can be a twat on here at times, but i can be a twat in real life as well, as charel :P

but NMC is a bloody brilliant idea, it is ghey when they ask "what parts should i get" its your bike, your f**king choose, and then when they don't get validated, its all

"trials foeum is wenk, u are al gayz and like my nuttts. feck u al"

they can't even spell correctly, and its not hard, i had/have learning dificlulties and sometimes it shows, but when i post i try and make it readable...

but you wouldn't use text talk of any of that crap in your GCSE'S (although know someone who did, he now proffesional bum)

so why should you use it here, i'm am on alot of mini forums and no one uses text speak, it is frowned on in a big way, so same should be here, therefore people who do get a hard time, i don't even use text speak when texting people, it irritates me as hard to read,

DON'T USE IT GAYS

The whole point in "txt" talk is to make sms messages easier to write, and to get more words in the amount of letters you can use.

This isn't the case on the computer and the forum, and having a big keyboard infront of you doesn't exactly give much of an excuse.
