The Top Gear Thread

Last nights top gear was f**king shit, I could do better with my camera phone and a few of my friends !

Completely agree! The building of their own electric car was pointless and long-windingly boring - if that's even a term?

My mate Chris is meant to be camera assistant for all the features filming, he missed two large pieces of dirt on the lens where they did a focus pull when they took the electric car down that country lane, I was shocked to say the least. I'm hoping next week's is better.

I was expecting hate for saying that, but I'm glad you agree.

For me the content was boring, but the R8 almost made up for that. And the production and scripting was incredibly mediocre and very much the same as every other episode !

A big let down after last weeks (Y)

Am i the only one whos never ever seen a gee wizz in the flesh? I gather they are mental popular in London?

I live in central London and its true they are everywhere. A guy up the road from me has one. I often see him watching it as he charges it from his house. I laugh everytime i pass. They are genuinly disgusting and self righteous. I really don't get if the owners are aware of how electricity is generated? The 4 seater ones make me laugh the most. I was driving in London recently when i was alongside a big guy in one and i just had to look at him and he knew i was thinking, ''what have you done with your life''? He looked ashamed.

So, are electric cars doing the environment any good? More electricity usage = more pollution to make the electricity. Plus a good chunk of power is lost in transfer, but with petrol non is.

I do believe that powering an electric car produces less kg of CO2 per Joule of energy than petrol though. The big issue are the non disposable materials electric cars are made from.

Yeah you're right, I can't see any energy being lost in the transfer of oil from it's source to my car

Well i was more getting at the fact that when petrol is petrol, it doesn't lose any of it's potential energy. Ie when you transfer 100 gallons of petrol from a to b, non of it is lost. But with electricity, a big chunk of it is lost when transporting it (i could be wrong, but isn't it more than half?) making me think that electricity is less 'green'. But then again i know very little about the processes.

I can see what you're getting at, but it is a slightly flawed point of view. To a company, the loss produced by drilling, transporting, cracking, mixing and transporting a certain volume of petrol than the loss brought about by zapping electricity down a power cable.

And, in an internal combustion engine, I do believe a large amount of the energy from petrol is wasted through heat and friction in the engine.

Petrol is the way forwards, I'd never buy a diesel/electric/anything that isn't petrol.

It's the revs, nothing is better for me than driving a thrashy, high revving car that sounds so crisp and tight at the top end, valves singing away as you tear up to the red line.

Arghhhh, LOVE ITTTT !!!!

You guys do realise where electricity comes from right? Most comes from coal power stations which has to be mined, transported and what not just like oil/petrol does.

I can see the point of JT's argument but i think at the moment i think electricity probably still wins.

Has anyone seen the advert on tv about using algae (although the dude on the tv pronounces it like an american which annoys the hell out of me) as a biofuel? Should be pretty cool if they crack it.

Yeah, but I didn't want to say anything that might make me look wrong - I actually deleted those bits :P

And I doubt the algae solution will go anywhere. Petrol is here to stay until it runs out. Far too much money behind it for it not to.

Won't be commercially viable for at least 20 years if ever though. Certainly won't cover our energy needs for the future.

I'd put all my money into fusion technology and wireless energy transmission for orbital solar power generation. Massive potential for clean, cheap and high yield energy.

Yeah heard about that wireless energy transmission thing. Sounds a bit like science fiction.

Your avatar pleases me. What is it?

Nah, it's starting to get somewhere. And I do believe Tesla (or some other electricity revolutionary) had plans and ideas for wireless energy and was even building transmitters but ran out of funds/permission.

And it's the seagulls from Finding Nemo.

Well you can already get wireless battery chargers for phones, iPods, GameBoys etc and there's some exciting wireless research going on for use with appliances. The big problem is the efficiency of the transfer as the distance increases.

As said above, my avatar is the seagulls from Finding Nemo. Had the same avatar for at least 2 years and thought now was a good time to change!

Arn''t you bored of that by now? I mean, its not that big a deal. I bet even Clarkson doesnt still absolutely love it like he makes out in his 'shows'.
